Hoping for judiciary to make right decision: Ankeet Chavan | IPL spot-fixing scandal Posted: 12 Jun 2013 03:20 AM PDT Released on bail after spending 27 days in jail, cricketer Ankeet Chavan, who was arrested for alleged involvement in the IPL spot-fixing scandal, on Wednesday hoped he would not be denied justice by the judiciary. "I am just hoping for the judiciary to make the right decision," Chavan said. Rajasthan Royals cricketers Chavan and S Sreesanth were on Tuesday released from Tihar jail along with 17 other accused. All of them were granted bail by a Delhi court. The court had also censured Delhi police for slapping MCOCA on the cricketers and other accused. The 27-year-old Chavan, an off-spinner, was naturally relieved to have walked out of jail. "I am thankful to the judiciary. I am happy and thankful to my family and all my friends who stood by me in tough times," he said. The two cricketers, along with another Rajasthan Royals teammate Ajit Chandila, were arrested on May 16 along with 11 bookies. The Delhi police charged them under the Indian Penal Code Section 420 and 120B, which deal with fraud, cheating and criminal conspiracy. source: ndtv.com RELATED LINK: I played the game in the true spirit: Sreesanth
I played the game in the true spirit: Sreesanth Posted: 12 Jun 2013 03:20 AM PDT India fast bowler S.Sreesanth, who was released from Tihar jail Tuesday on bail, said the last 27 days have taught him a lot and retiterated that he was innocent. "I am very happy. I should thank my lawyer. It was a testing phase for me, the last 27 days. I believe in the Indian judiciary and I am sure my innocence will be proved," Sreesanth told reporters in a press conference here after coming out of jail. "I played the game in the right spirit. I'll abide by the process of law. I won't forget the days spent in jail. The last 27 days have taught me a lot. I can say I totally believe in Indian judiciary. My innocence will be proven soon," said Sreesanth. A Delhi court Monday granted bail to suspended cricketer Sreesanth, his Rajasthan Royals teammate Ankeet Chavan and 17 bookies who were booked under the provisions of Maharashtra Control of Organised Crime Act (MCOCA) in the IPL spot fixing scandal. Additional Session Judge Vinay Kumar Khanna granted bail to the accused on a personal bond of Rs. 50,000 each with one surety of the like amount. The court said granting bail to accused indicted police for slapping stringent provisions of MCOCA and that there was no prima facie evidence to try them under the act. Another Rajasthan Royals cricketer, Ajit Chandila, and six others had not applied for bail. Delhi Police have so far arrested 26 people, including Sreesanth and two of his Rajasthan Royals teammates, in connection with the case. source: yahoo.comRELATED LINK: Hoping for judiciary to make right decision: Ankeet Chavan

Dhoni has Backed me all the time: Ravindra Jadeja Posted: 12 Jun 2013 01:32 AM PDT The only sign of discomfort in Ravindra Jadeja's 'performance' on Tuesday was answering questions in English. The International Cricket Council's 'mandatory' requirement left Jadeja in a 'spin' but he still managed to express himself. "Hindi mein pucho na? (Why don't you ask questions in Hindi?)" Jadeja told Indian reporters, but since it's an ICC rule, he could ill afford to 'break' the rules. Like his bowling, the 24-year-old Jadeja did a pretty neat job. The conditions were somewhat for the pacers when you look at it. How did you convert it into a pitch which could help your spin? I think the wicket was a bit slow, so if you bowl slow, you're getting turns. But I was just trying to bowl slow in the air, and, yes, I was getting turn. So trying not to bowl outside the off stump, and not outside the leg stump. I just kept on a straight line. How would you rank these bowling performances among all your international matches? I think this is one of my best bowling performances, I can say that, because I got three times four-wickets in my career. So this is the first time I got five wickets, so I'm very happy. I'm very happy that I got five wickets. So this is one of my best performances in ODI cricket. Are you under any pressure because West Indies had big hitters like Pollard and their other batsmen? No, I was not thinking about the batsmen particularly; I was just thinking of the way I'm going to bowl and what is my situation, what is my role in the team, and what the wicket was doing. So I was just trying to bowl, as I said, just in right areas. So it was not easy to get any easy runs for new batsmen. The team has been playing very well, including the practice matches where you have won four back‑to‑back matches. Considering the controversy, and difficult time pressure, how is the team bonding, the young and experienced team, bonding and playing so well? What is the recipe for this success? I think everybody is doing their own job. The batsmen are scoring runs, bowlers are taking wickets, and fielders are doing a very good job on the field. So I think we have a very good balanced side. I can say that. Particularly we are getting very good first 10 to 15 over start by the openers, both the openers, Rohit and Shikhar, so that is a good sign for us for the crucial games. How are you motivating yourself? Yeah, I just you know before the match I just watched my videos. I would just watch my videos yesterday as well, and just trying to get my best on the field. Coming to England in June, you would have probably not expected such wickets. Have you been surprised by how the wickets have been so dry? I think, yeah. We played two practice games, one game in Birmingham, and then in that match the wicket was also a bit slow and a turner. So, yeah, we played against South Africa and the second the ball was turning and here as well. So just my thinking was like that. I was just trying to bowling slow in there rather than the others and for India. So, just it was helping me, and I was getting a slow turn from the wicket. It's not that easy to go after the bowler. Have you been surprised at how the wickets have been? No, no, no, because I played again in England in 2011 on this ground and the wicket was the same, so I'm not surprised. Dhoni seems to look like he ‑‑ I'm sorry? I'm saying that Dhoni, he seems -- he always bats the players that he has trusted, and he's won by his instincts. So probably you and Rohit are certainly among the kind of players that he places a lot of trust in. Can you just talk to the kind of relationship that you share with him, what goes on when you kind of --? I can say that he has a very good cricketing brain. So he can read a person's cricket, I believe, very well. That's why he can back me all the time in batting and bowling. I was just trying to give my best whenever I get the opportunity. Whenever I get a chance to bat, whenever I get a chance to bowl, just trying my best, that's it. You've played South Africa; you've played the West Indies. They have a shoot-out, as my colleague described it, to decide who goes into the next round. Could you assess for us the relative strengths and weaknesses of the teams and how you think that particular match will go? Against South Africa? Against West Indies? Yeah, we don't care about the other games. We're just trying to focus on our game. We are taking a game at a time. We don't care. We don't bother about other games. So if we are winning, then we are improved, that's it. That's what we are thinking right now. source: icc-cricket.com RELATED LINKS: India vs West Indies: ICC Champions Trophy 2013 - ReportIndia vs West Indies: ICC Champions Trophy 2013 - Statistical HighlightsImages: India v West Indies - ICC Champions Trophy 2013

India vs West Indies: ICC Champions Trophy 2013 - Report Posted: 12 Jun 2013 01:33 AM PDT Shikhar Dhawan smashed his second ODI century as India completed a comprehensive eight-wicket win with 65 balls to spare against the West Indies in a group B match of the ICC Champions Trophy at The Oval here on Tuesday. In Group B, Pakistan are out of the tournament. The June 14 fixture between South Africa and the West Indies in Cardiff, will decide the second semifinalist from the group. South Africa and West Indies have won a game each. Earlier in the day, an unchanged Indian side inserted the West Indies in to bat and removed the dangerous Chris Gayle but couldn't make further dents early on in the WI line-up as Johnson Charles and Darren Bravo garnered runs. The pair added 78 until Ravindra Jadeja trapped the opener leg before for 60. The left-arm spinner who has become the Dhoni's go to man in recent times did not disappoint when handed the ball. He then followed up with the wicket of Marlon Samuels to bring India back into the game. Although the on field umpire didn't find the batsman out, the DRS found the batsman out giving India a much needed breakthrough. In Jadeja's next over Ramnaresh Sarwan perished nicking the delivery where Dhoni collected the ball going down the leg side behind the stumps. Slowed down, the pair of Bravo's – Darren and Dwayne added 31 in about nine overs before Darren while coming down the track to Ravichandran Ashwin was stumped by Dhoni. Wickets then fell in a cluster and the WI were in danger of being bowled out before finishing their quota of overs. The WI skipper taking the aerial route was caught by Jadeja just inside the ropes. Kieron Pollard was the next to be sent back. The big-hitting batsman holed out Ishant Sharma to long on in an attempt to clear the boundary while Kumar took a good catch to remove the danger man. Eight runs later, Jadeja bowling his second over after being reintroduced into the attack, dismissed Sunil Narine and then castled Ravi Rampaul as his fifth scalp. Darren Sammy played a swashbuckling cameo to take his team across the 200-run mark. After damaging Ishant Sharma's figures by clobbering the pacer for 21 runs in the penultimate over, he claimed 14 off Jadeja in the last over. Back in the side in place of Denesh Ramdin, Sammy remained unbeaten on 56 off 35 with five boundaries and four sixes while taking his team to 233. Chasing two more points to strengthen their position in the points table, the Indian openers put up their consecutive century partnership with Rohit Sharma reaching his half-century en route to 101-run stand. Although Sammy created a few half chances to dismiss the openers, the duo batted superbly to set up a strong platform for their team. It was not until the 16th over that WI got their first wicket with the DRS coming to their rescue to send back the elegant right hand batsman for 52. Even as India were within sniffing distance of the target and ahead of the required runs under the D/L method, the drizzle turned to heavier showers and halted play. But, without losing any overs and India needing 30 runs with eight wickets in hand Dhawan and Karthik came to the crease when play resumed after a short interruption. While India was coasting to the target, the opener was inching towards his second successive ODI century and Karthik towards his half-century. After the south-paw crossed the three-figure mark with a six and had brought India within two runs of victory he played through the rest of the over to give his partner the strike and an opportunity to bring up a well deserved half-century. On the first ball of the next over, Karthik smashed a boundary over the covers off Pollard to take his team across the line and remained unbeaten on 51 while Dhawan was not out on 102. India now take on arch rivals Pakistan in their last game in the league phase. Brief scores: West Indies 233/9 in 50 overs (J Charles 60, D Sammy 56*, R Jadeja 5/36, B Kumar 1/32) lost to India236/2 in 39.1 overs (S Dhawan 102*, R Sharma 52, D Karthik 51*, S Narine 2/49) by eight wickets Man of the Match: Ravindra Jadeja for his game-changing spell to shift the match India's favour. Presentation: Dwayne Bravo: "Not enough runs, after the start we got, we deserved to have got 40-50 runs more, having said that, the Indians bowled well, had their plans and stuck to it. Congratulations to Sammy for coming back into the team and performing. We need to work on working the ball around, our strike-rates as middle-order batsmen. Definitely we bowled too wide, fast outfield, gotta give credit to the Indian batters, we still have a good chance to qualify. Sunil is our key bowler but not enough runs, he bowled very well, my aim was to make sure he bowled out. The next match is like a final itself, we know it is not going to be an easy game, but we know we have the talent to do it." MS Dhoni: "Overall a very good performance, WI got to a very good start, they seemed like they would get 280 runs or so, our bowlers did very well after that, our bowlers were able to keep the batsmen at their respective ends, didn't let them rotate easily. You think I know him (Jadeja) well, but even I'm finding out over a period of time. I think the execution was not really there (at the death). We'd been happy with 230 at the outset. I think the young batsmen have accepted the challenge, Dhawan did well in the Tests, Rohit took up the challenge of opening the batting, also it helps that we have changed into a very good fielding side. (crowd cheers when asked about Pakistan game) I don't think Indian team has every played a dead game, I think it is also important in areas where we want to improve." Man of the Match is Ravindra Jadeja: "I was just trying to bowl in the right areas, I played here against England and took two wickets, I'm just trying to give my good performance. I was just bowling wicket-to-wicket and letting the pitch do the rest." source: bcci.tvRELATED LINKS: India vs West Indies: ICC Champions Trophy 2013 - Statistical HighlightsDhoni has Backed me all the time: Ravindra JadejaImages: India v West Indies - ICC Champions Trophy 2013 |
