Badrinath Interview: CSK vs PWI Posted: 15 Apr 2013 10:01 PM PDT The Super Kings haven't quite been able to regain their home supremacy this season as a ratio of 2 losses to a win so far would suggest. After losing their first match of the season, against Mumbai Indians, CSK lost to the modest Pune Warriors India at home. The sole victory came against RCB, thanks to RP Singh's overstepping foot. After the 24-run loss to PWI, iplt20.com caught up with one of the senior members of CSK and the anchor of their batting line-up, S Badrinath. We quizzed Badri about the misfiring openers, crumbling middle-order and the tendency to leave a bit too much work for the final overs while chasing. Losing at home is not something that CSK are used to. But has this season been a little dodgy in that regards? Yes, we always pride ourselves on our home record. This stadium is a bit like a fortress for us and it's been disappointing to lose two games already this season. But these are still early days in the tournament and we have always been slow starters. We'll take a few things from this game and move on. Especially while chasing, do you think the team leaves a bit too much till the end? Yes, let's be honest. We haven't been able to get great starts and we've lost too many wickets at the top order. That's something that needs to be addressed. However, these batsmen have done it for us before and we need to have faith in them. What was the strategy behind not playing Michael Hussey today and in hindsight did that hamper the team's ability to pace the chase well? It was something got to do with the combination. We wanted Anirudha to get going at the top of the order and get Albie (Morkel) in to add some firepower in the batting and another bowling option. It was very unfortunate that Anirudha got out off the second ball. Opening partnership was the hallmark of CSK's batting in 2012. Do you think the openers not clicking is hurting the team this season? Yes, that's true. The openers are not able to get us to the required start. In that one game against KXIP, the openers just saw us through. Apart from that, this is an issue that needs to be addressed. Faf (du Plessis) was brilliant for us last season at the top of the order. Opening is such a key role in Twenty20 cricket. In the first six overs the fielders are inside and you need to capitalise on that. That start takes on the momentum to the middle order and further in the innings. Is there a case for you to move up the order and open? You did that pretty well last year in some of the matches. I don't know. I have always done well at No.4. If you see my record, my best average and strike-rate is when I bat at 4. Also, these openers have done it for us in the past and I think they should be given time. Despite adding to the bowling firepower, death bowling remains a problem for CSK? It has been a bit of a mixed bag so far. They bowled really well in the first couple of matches but today we slipped when it came to our death bowling. That is something that we will take up and work on. source: iplt20.com |
CSK vs PWI - M19 Report & Stats: IPL 2013 Posted: 15 Apr 2013 09:36 PM PDT Match Report: Pune Warriors India put an end to Chennai Super Kings winning streak at home with a 24 run win at the MA Chidambaram Stadium on Monday. Having posted 159 on the back of Aaron Finch and Steven Smith's contributions, PWI pegged back CSK's run chase with regular wickets to finish on top. Chasing 160, CSK were jolted early as Bhuvneshwar Kumar trapped Srikkanth Anirudha (0) leg before and bowled a fantastic first over maiden. Murali Vijay was given a reprieve on 1 as Tirumalasetti Suman dropped a sitter. Suman however redeemed himself by pouching Suresh Raina (8) off Kumar. Abhishek Nayar then had Vijay (24) caught by Ross Taylor to leave CSK at 40 for 3. Subramaniam Badrinath (34) along with Ravindra Jadeja consolidated for CSK putting on 46 runs for the fourth wicket before Mitchell Marsh had the former caught by Smith at long-off. PWI continued to chip away at the wickets as Marsh struck again dismissing Jadeja (27). With CSK needing 61 off 30 balls, Rahul Sharma got rid of Dwayne Bravo (1) to leave the hosts six wickets down in the 16th over. Ashok Dinda picked up the important wicket of MS Dhoni (10) leaving CSK needing a miracle for a win. CSK eventually finished 24 runs short. Earlier PWI elected to bat after winning the toss and they started positively as Finch hit three boundaries in the first over off Dirk Nannes. He continued to dominate the CSK bowling smashing two boundaries off Jadeja and then two more off Nannes' 5th. PWI raced to 48 for 0 in their power play. Jadeja provided CSK their first breakthrough having Finch (67) stumped by Dhoni after the Australian had launched him for a six the previous delivery. Chris Morris then struck, dismissing Robin Uthappa (26) caught at long off to bring CSK back into the game. Steve Smith playing his first game of the season put Bravo away for consecutive boundaries to get a move on. Morris struck again dismissing Taylor (8) and Bravo then had Marsh (2) walk back. Smith (39*) provided a late flourish with a six and a boundary off Nannes before reverse flicking Bravo for a six. PWI finished their 20th over at 159 for 5. Man-of-the-match: Steve Smith Brief Scores: Pune Warriors India 159 for 5 (Aaron Finch 67, Chris Morris 2-25) defeated Chennai Super Kings 135 for 8 (Subramaniam Badrinath 34, Bhuvneshwar Kumar) by 24 runs. Stats Highlights: 243.75: Steven Smith's strike-rate – best in IPL2013 in an innings of 25 runs or more. 67: Aron Finch's innings – highest for Pune Warriors India in IPL2013 – He bettered his own record of 64 against Rajasthan Royals at Pune. 19: Number of stumpings made by MS Dhoni – most by any keeper in IPL. 5: Number of bowlers to bowl wicket-maidens in IPL2013 – Bhuvneshwar Kumar joined Irfan Pathan, Dale Steyn, Sreesanth and Praveen Kumar in doing so. 1: Chennai Super Kings suffered their first defeat against Pune Warriors India at home. Presentation: Steven Smith is the Man of the Match. Smith: "Was fresh and ready to go. Got my chance tonight with Angelo sitting out. Dont know what I was thinking, comes off at times [the reverse-sweep for six]. We could have got another 10 if we hadn't lost a few wickets." Taylor: "Set the tone with the way Finch batted. Smith came in and finished it off. 160 was going to be competitive. Bhuvi led the attack. We fielded well too." Dhoni: "We gave few too many in the first few overs and death has always been a worry for us. We have not been able to capitalise on first six overs with the bat, they are crucial on pitches like these where it slows down after seven-eight overs. Yorker is a perfect recipe, if you can bowl three or four it is very difficult to hit. It is good that we got a game like this early in the tournament and not later." source: iplt20.com |
