Dinesh Karthik, Mumbai Indians Mr. Dependable Posted: 14 Apr 2013 07:52 AM PDT It was a visual delight till it lasted; something that the thousands, who had flocked the Wankhede stadium, on a sunny Saturday evening, felt blessed to have witnessed. The master blaster in full flow. The stands wore a sea of blue as they were brought to their feet by their very own local hero who played like a man in 'some' mood for the 29 deliveries he faced. After his departure, the responsibility was yet again on the young duo of Dinesh Karthik and Rohit Sharma. (Also Read: MI vs PWI - M15 Report & Stats: IPL 2013) While Rohit Sharma went on to make a match winning half century, on the other side was Mumbai Indians' new Mr.Dependable: Dinesh Karthik who went about scoring his runs with ease, yet again notching up a 29 ball 41. His previous three scores read: 86, 37 and 60. With 224 runs in four games and leading the run charts for the Mumbai Indians, Karthik seemed to have hit a purple patch. "I have been saying this from the start of the tournament that the key for me is to be consistent and help Mumbai Indians win games. If I can keep doing that, I will be very happy." Karthik said, as he spoke exclusively to IPLT20.com after the match. Karthik sure is enjoying his stint with the Mumbai Indians. May it be playing alongside the players he has admired as a kid or living up to the expectations of the team management. "I just like the fact that John Wright and Anil Kumble trusted me and sent me at number three. I felt that I had to deliver for them and wanted to give it my best." When Karthik walked in to bat against the Pune Warriors India on Saturday, MI had already lost their captain Ricky Ponting. Six runs later they lost Sachin Tendulkar and yet again it was the Karthik-Sharma duo that got the Mumbai Indians sailing with a half century stand. For Karthik the mantra was simple. "Just have a look at the situation and play according to the situation; that is the key. You have to be relaxed. It is normal for you to go through a lot of things as a player, but when you get into the middle you just have to try and concentrate every ball," said Karthik. The Mumbai Indians put up 183 runs on the board, but Karthik said, the team was in no mood to take the Pune Warriors India lightly."We were happy that we got that many runs on the board, but we knew they had a very good batting line up and could bat till number eight or nine. It was important that we bowled well throughout the game and the bowlers did that." It was Mumbai Indians' second consecutive win at home this year, which augured well for the team. "Last year we had a tough year, we did not win many home games, but this year things look good for us," said Karthik. source: iplt20.com |
Suresh Raina and the lefties mutual admiration club Posted: 14 Apr 2013 07:45 AM PDT Suresh Raina is a team man. How often have we seen him run from point to midwicket just to pat his team mate on the back for a good fielding effort? Every time an opposition wicket falls, Raina is the first to reach for the bowler's hair (ask Doug Bollinger). The latest demonstration of Raina's belief, "It's very important to enjoy each other's success" was, when all his team-mates were busy rejuvenating after the high-octane drama, Raina ran on the field to welcome Man-of-the-Match Ravindra Jadeja from the presentation ceremony. After a slice of luck (in form of RP Singh's overstepping front foot) gave CSK a dramatic win, Raina described to iplt20.com how it was to watch it all happen from the dugout. The left-hander spoke about CSK's strengthened bowling attack and the two young fast bowlers from his state, Uttar Pradesh, he has high expectations from. In a special segment of the interview, Raina shared the special bond he shares with one of the game's greatest batsmen, Brian Lara. All hail Sir Jaddu Raina credited Ravindra Jadeja's 20-ball unbeaten 38 run-knock for the win. Not to forget his match-winning edge off the last ball. "It was very difficult to watch this game from the dressing room. But I think we played really well; especially Jadeja, who today showed what sort of a player he is. He showed character and took responsibility. I'm very happy for what he has achieved. He has scored a lot of runs in the domestic competitions and he's also improved as a person. He's more determined as a batsman." Moment of madness Confusion prevailed for a few seconds. Everyone thought RCB had won the game by a run, until umpire Choudhary stuck his arm out to signal a no-ball. Raina described the mood in the CSK dugout thus. "It was chaos. When Jadeja played that last shot, we sat in the dugout and saw the RCB guys going up thinking they'd won. We thought so too. Then suddenly Choudhary signalled the no-ball and we didn't know what was happening. It was only after a few moments that we realised that we were sitting in the winning team dugout." His young UP colts Captaining Uttar Pradesh in the 2012-13 Ranji Trophy, Raina was impressed by two young pacers, Ankeet Rajpoot and Imtiyaz Ahmed. This is how he got the two promising lads into the CSK camp. "I played with them during the domestic season and these guys were putting a lot of effort on the field. I thought they deserved a crack at the IPL and so spoke to Flem (CSK coach Stephen Fleming) about them. He said he'll definitely have a look at them and he liked what he saw. Imtiyaz and Ankeet had a major role to play in Uttar Pradesh qualifying for the Ranji Trophy knockouts without RP Singh, Bhuvan (Bhuvneshwar Kumar) and PK (Praveen Kumar). They were really keen on getting some international exposure and I thought this will help them. I'm very happy that they're here. With compliments, from Prince A few days ago, Raina got a surprise on Twitter, when Brian Charles Lara wrote to him, "I want to see you playing some more Test cricket and I know u have what it takes to make it big in that arena." "He wants me to do well in international cricket and he thinks that I can. It was the biggest compliment I've received. It's my biggest dream to establish myself as a Test cricketer and if a legend like him thinks that I have it in me, it feels really special." The bond with the legend Raina told us a few stories that revealed Lara's admiration for the youngster's talent went well beyond the Twitter praise. "When I went to the West Indies in 2006 for the ODI series, I was very young and shy. I didn't speak English and so wouldn't talk much with anyone. During that time, I remember he came up to me and broke the ice. He asked me about myself, my family and made me feel relaxed. He gave me a book on his 400 not-out (record highest Test score that Lara made against England in 2004), on which I took his autograph. I have preserved it at my home till date and always will. When I went to the West Indies again, for the 2011 Test series, he threw a party for all of us for winning the World Cup." Pearls of wisdom What's the best cricketing advice that Brian Lara has given Suresh Raina? "I had a cricketing chat with him and he told me that the most important thing while batting is your mental strength and the ability to read the bowler' mind. He said it's all about how you feel on that particular day the moment you put your jersey on." source: iplt20.com |
CSK vs RCB - M16 Report & Stats: IPL 2013 Posted: 14 Apr 2013 01:20 AM PDT Match Report: There could not have been anything more bizarre scripted in a T20 contest and the Pepsi IPL 2013, provided another first to history. Two needed off the last delivery, Ravindra Jadeja cut uppishly and was smartly taken at third man, the RCB dug-out and fans breaking into frenzied celebrations, only to see the wind being knocked off their lungs, in the most crudest of manner. Umpire Choudhary signaled a no ball and along with it a victory for Chennai Super Kings after the batsmen had run a single! The effect of a nail biting finish left a bad taste for the visitors who had done well up until then. It was an unbelievable end to a contest that saw the scales tilt either way after RCB had posted 165 and had CSK trailing on run-rate for most of the chase. It was for Chennai Super Kings a four-wickets victory over Royal Challengers Bangalore. Chasing 166, CSK were jolted early as Ravi Ramapaul sent back Murali Vijay caught behind. R Vinay Kumar struck the very next over having Michael Hussey (4) caught by Mayank Agarwal to leave CSK stuttering at 10 for 2. Subramaniam Badrinath was given a reprieve on 1 when RP Singh put down a straight forward catch. Suresh Raina got into Vinay Kumar's 6th over pumping him for three boundaries. Syed Mohammad provided the much needed breakthrough getting rid of Raina (30). Mohammad struck again dismissing Badrinath (34) with Agarwal taking a splendid catch. MS Dhoni got CSK going with a 92 meter hit off RP Singh in the 14th over. Needing 54 off 24 balls, Dhoni hit a boundary before launching the next one 104 meters down. Needing 29 off the final two overs, Rampaul struck twice dismissing the dangerous Dhoni (33) and Dwayne Bravo (8) to change the equation to 16 from 6. Jadeja hit a boundary and a six of the first two deliveries to get CSK back into the game. With two runs needed off the final delivery, Jadeja (38*) holed out at third man only to find that RP Singh had over-stepped the line to hand CSK a joyful win. Earlier CSK won the toss and put RCB in. Chris Morris struck early having Chris Gayle (4) caught behind. Mayank Agarwal and Virat Kohli got on with the task of rebuilding putting on 46 runs for the second wicket. Agarwal (25) hit Jadeja for a six before Ravichandran Ashwin, with a clever bit of bowling, had him stumped with a ball down the leg-side. Kohli was given a lucky break when the umpire failed to give an edge to Dhoni off Bravo in the 12th over. De Villiers hit two consecutive boundaries, taking 16 runs off Dirk Nannes 15th over. Kohli was given another reprieve on 46 when Bravo dropped him off his own bowling. Morris struck twice in the 17th over first having Kohli (58) caught behind, before dismissing Daniel Christian (2). Bravo got Rampaul (0) the following over. De Villiiers (64) continued his assault dismissing Morris for 20 runs off the penultimate over. RCB eventually finishing at 165 for 6 from their 20 overs. Man-of-the-Match: Ravindra Jadeja Brief Scores: Royal Challengers Bangalore 165 for 6 (AB de Villiers 64, Chris Morris 3-40) lost to Chennai Super Kings 166 for 6 (Ravindra Jadeja 38, Ravi Rampaul 3-31) by 4 wickets. Stats Highlights: 174.19: Ravindra Jadeja's strike-rate in IPL2013 - highest for any batsman scoring 50 or more runs. 13: Number of wicket-keeping dismissals made by MS Dhoni off R Ashwin's bowling - most for an Indian bowler-keeper pair. They went ahead of Dinesh Karthik - Amit Mishra pair's record of 12 dismissals while playing for Delhi Daredevils. 12: Number of no-balls bowled by RP Singh in IPL. He is way behind the record though, which is held by Sreesanth with 20 no-balls. 7: Number of consecutive innings in which Virat Kohli has scored at least 25 against Chennai Super Kings. His scores: 34 (2010), 35, 31, 70* and 35 (2011), 57 (2012) and 58 (2013). Kohli's streak of seven consecutive scores of 25 is the longest for any batsman against Chennai Super Kings. Abhishek Nayar is second with four such scores in consecutive innings. 4: Number of dismissals made by MS Dhoni in the match – most by any keeper in a match in IPL2013. Presentation: Kohli: "It was our game to lose in the last six overs. We are relying on big partnership as of now, a few small partnerships will do good for us. RP, T20 is a game like that, I'm still proud of him." MS Dhoni: "The performance was great, we need to improve our death bowling drastically. We didn't get off to a good start, the pressure was there on the middle order. You can't really afford to play too many dot balls, you have to be there till the 15th or 16th over to cash in." Jadeja is the Man of the Match: "[With reference to Sir] they are just making fun in a lighter way, not a serious way. I was confident about my batting, I scored two triple-hundreds this season. I was not trying to play any silly shots, it was a good wicket." source: iplt20.com |
MI vs PWI - M15 Report & Stats: IPL 2013 Posted: 13 Apr 2013 11:54 PM PDT Match Report: Mumbai Indians kept the momentum going for themselves, recording a telling 41-runs victory over neighbours Pune Warriors India at the Wankhede on Saturday. While batting it was Master Sachin Tendulkar (44), the in-form Dinesh Karthik (41) and Rohit Sharma (62*) who set up the target and then Mitchelle Johnson ensured the reply from PWI was a no contest. The win was another two points for the Mumbai Indians, who on the day, in support of the 'Education For All' programme, had 11,000 children inside the stadium, dedicated their victory to the under privileged kids. Chasing 184, PWI got off to a horrible start as Aaron Finch (0) was bowled first ball by Johnson. Ross Taylor (4) was run out by Ambati Rayudu and it only got worse as Johnson swung the ball sharply to send Uthappa's (7) off-stump cart-wheeling to reduce PWI to 13 for 3. Tirumalasetti Suman (23) opened his account with two glorious boundaries through the point region. He fell trying to clear the fence caught by Kieron Pollard off Harbhajan Singh. Yuvraj Singh (24) hit the first six of the PWI innings depositing Pollard behind square leg in the 8th over. Just as he was looking good, he was dismissed, caught beautifully by Rishi Dhawan. PWI lost their sixth wicket as Angelo Mathews (19) fell in pursuit of runs to Pragyan Ojha. Mitchell Marsh kept the fight going hitting a few sixes including a monster 99 meter hit off Johnson. Lasith Malinga dismissed Abhishek Nayar (6) and Marsh's (38) wicket off Johnson, caught brilliantly by Dhawan was the last nail in the coffin for PWI. They eventually finished at 142 for 8. Earlier MI opted to bat and openers Ricky Ponting and Sachin Tendulkar started positively. Ponting hit Bhuvneshwar Kumar for two boundaries before Tendulkar went after Ashok Dinda smashing four successive boundaries. Tendulkar was put down by Yuvraj Singh off Rahul Sharma at mid-on and the Master responded by depositing the next ball over the ropes. Yuvraj Singh soon made amends dismissing Ponting (13) caught at point. Aaron Finch got PWI their second wicket having Tendulkar (44) caught by Marsh. Dinesh Karthik stroked Yuvraj Singh for consecutive boundaries in the 12th over before pulling Angelo Mathews for a six the next over. Mitchell Marsh trapped the in-form Karthik (41) leg before to provide his team another timely wicket. Dinda's day got worse as Rohit Sharma (62*) slammed him for consecutive sixes, taking 19 runs off the 17th over. Marsh's next over went for 21 runs as Sharma and Pollard (19*) pressed their foot on the pedal. Some more lusty blows by Sharma in the last over propelled MI to 183 for 3 from their 20 overs. Man-of-the-Match: Rohit Sharma Brief Scores: Mumbai Indians 183 for 3 (Rohit Sharma 62*; Aaron Finch 1-11) defeated Pune Warriors India 142 for 8 (Mitchell Marsh 38; Mitchell Johnson 3-33) by 41 runs. Stats Highlights: 72.72: Ricky Ponting's strike-rate in IPL2013 – The worst for a batsman playing at least 50 balls in the tournament. 65: Runs scored by Mumbai Indians in the last 4 overs – most by any side in IPL2013. 63: Runs conceded by Ashok Dinda - most expensive figures in IPL history, along with Varun Aaron who also conceded as many runs while playing for Delhi Daredevils against Chennai Super Kings at Chennai in 2012. 43: Number of catches taken by Rohit Sharma in IPL – most by any fielder. He went ahead of Suresh Raina's tally of 42. 10: Number of sixes hit by Rohit Sharma in IPL2013. He has hit only 9 fours! 4: Consecutive innings in which Dinesh Karthik has scored 35 or more in a match in IPL2013. His scores in the tournament so far: 60 vs Royal Challengers Bangalore, 37 vs Chennai Super Kings, 86 vs Delhi Daredevils and 41 vs Pune Warriors India. 3: Aaron Finch became third batsman to be dismissed off the first ball of team's innings in IPL2013 after Unmukt Chand (twice) and Kusal Perera. Presentation: Rohit Sharma is the Man of the Match. Rohit: "It is important for the team for me to get going. I wanted to get runs behind my back and I am happy I did it today. Karthik was hitting the ball well, better than me, my role was to give him as many balls as possible. I wanted to wait for the right time, probably after the 15th and 16th over, and I got it right." Ricky Ponting being cheered at Wankhede. Ponting: "180 was always going to be tough for the opposition to chase. We got off to a better start. We laid the foundation for the boys to come in and smack it around. Dinesh and Rohit and playing incredibly well. We are getting to know each others' games particularly well. We were outstanding with the new ball today." Angelo Mathews: "We were pretty poor on the field. Last five overs we could not execute our plans. We had to nail those yorkers and could not do it. Dinda, Bhuvi, Marsh have been doing it for past few games, I back my bowlers." Mitchell Johnson: "I meant to swing the ball back in, that was my goal tonight, with the humid conditions, you try to swing the ball. That is what Ricky wanted me to do. When you can produce balls like that, seeing the off stumps cartwheel like that is pleasing for a fast bowler." source: iplt20.com |
