RCB vs RR - M27 Report & Stats: IPL 2013 Posted: 20 Apr 2013 08:51 PM PDT Match Report: Royal Challengers Bangalore extended their winning streak at home with a seven-wicket win over Rajasthan Royals at the M Chinnaswamy Stadium in Bangalore. RCB bowlers put on a wonderful display as RR capitulated to be bowled out for just 117. RCB chased it down as Chris Gayle anchored the run-chase and took his team past the finish line. The win took RCB to the top of the points table. Chasing a meager 118, RCB started positively as Tillakaratne Dilshan hit S Sreesanth for consecutive boundaries in the second over. He continued his assault with another couple of boundaries off James Faulkner. RCB put on 48 runs in the power play. Shane Watson provided RR with the first breakthrough as he had Dilshan (25) caught behind. Faulkner then castled the in-form Virat Kohli (1). Watson struck again to have the dangerous AB de Villiers caught at mid-off leaving RCB at 64 for 3 in 9 overs. Chris Gayle played an uncharacteristic cautious knock anchoring the RCB innings. Saurabh Tiwary too was cautious to begin with, but broke the shackles when he bludgeoned a six off Ajit Chandila in the 15th over. Needing 16 runs off the final four overs, Tiwary went after Siddharth Trivedi hitting him for two boundaries before Gayle finished it with a six. Gayle and Tiwary put on 59 runs to see RCB home with 13 balls to spare. Earlier in the evening RCB won the toss and opted to field. Watson got RR running with a boundary off the first delivery. Ravi Rampaul drew first blood for the hosts sending back Watson (6) caught by Murali Kartik at mid-off. Ajinkya Rahane (14) hit a boundary and a six off Rampaul's third over, before Jaydev Unadkat had him caught at point off a slower delivery. Bangalore boys, Rahul Dravid and Stuart Binny got on with the task of rebuilding the innings and put on 40 runs for the third wicket; Binny smashed Unadkat for a boundary and a six in the 8th over. R Vinay Kumar had Binny (33) top edge a pull to give RCB their third wicket. Murali Kartik dismissed Dravid (35) caught at long-off to trigger a collapse. Vinay Kumar in the next over had Brad Hodge (13) caught behind before RP Singh struck twice, dismissing Faulkner (3) and Dishant Yagnik (5). The wickets continued to tumble as Sreesanth (0), Shaun Tait (1), and Trivedi (3) fell as RR were bundled out for 117 with two balls to spare. Man-of-the-Match: Vinay Kumar Brief Scores: Rajasthan Royals 117 all out in 19.4 overs (Rahul Dravid 35, RP Singh 3-13) lost to Royal Challengers Bangalore 123 for 3 in 17.5 overs (Chris Gayle 49*, Shane Watson 2-11) by 7 wickets. Stats Highlights: 793: Runs scored by Chris Gayle at Bengaluru in IPL – most by any player. He went ahead of fellow teammate Virat Kohli's tally of 777 runs. Interestingly Gayle was playing his 17th innings at Bengaluru as against Kohli's 29. 111.36: Chris Gayle's strike-rate in the match – his worst for Royal Challengers Bangalore where he faced 25 or more balls. 57: Number of wides sent down by Shaun Tait in IPL – nearly 3 wides per match! 5: Royal Challengers Bangalore have won all their five home games in IPL 2013. 2: Number of maiden overs bowled by Ravi Rampaul in IPL 2013. He emulated Delhi Daredevils' Irfan Pathan in doing so. Presentation Virat Kohli: "Happy with the outcome as this was not a last-ball finish. The wicket was decent enough to bat and the bowlers made RR batsmen play shots that they shouldn't have played. I made one point to the bowlers in the meeting - you try to make your own plans, you decide what field you want to. It was a smart chase and Gayle and Tiwary played a perfect role. " Rahul Dravid: "Lovely to come here in Bangalore, unfortunately the game didn't pan out our way, but RCB outplayed us here. It was a 150-kind of wicket and unfortunately, our middle order is not really experienced and our tail didn't add much. Shaun Tait is an impact bowler and we have to use him time and time again, especially as there was Gayle around today. But unfortunately, Gayle changed his game completely today. KKR vs CSK - M26 Report & Stats: IPL 2013 Posted: 20 Apr 2013 08:15 PM PDT Match Report: The battle between last season's finalists saw Chennai Super Kings beating Kolkata Knight Riders by four wickets at the Eden Gardens in Kolkata. Ravindra Jadeja starred for CSK with ball and bat as he first picked up three wickets to restrict KKR for just 119, before playing a match-winning knock of 36 off just 14 deliveries to see his team home. Chasing a modest 120, CSK sprung a surprise opening with Ravichandran Ashwin alongside Michael Hussey. However the ploy didn't work as Ashwin (11) struggled to get going before he was caught at short mid-wicket off Sunil Narine. CSK managed only 27 runs from their power play before Murali Vijay (2) was given out leg before off Sachithra Senanayake. Suresh Raina (7) was caught at long-on by Narine off Yusuf Pathan to give KKR their third wicket. Eoin Morgan ran out MS Dhoni (9) as KKR fought back. With KKR drying up the runs, CSK required 50 runs off the final five overs. Jacques Kallis rattled Subramanium Badrinath's (6) stump to bring Jadeja to the middle. The all-rounder started off in fantastic fashion slamming a huge six straight away. Hussey (40) then fell to Lakshmipathy Balaji caught by Pathan at deep square-leg. Jadeja smashed another six, this time off Narine, before hitting Kallis for consecutive boundaries. CSK reached the target with five balls remaining. Earlier electing to bat skipper Gautam Gambhir got KKR's innings underway with two boundaries in the first over. Pathan, opening the innings, too started aggressively with two boundaries off the second. Gambhir (25) then slammed consecutive boundaries off Albie Morkel before a brilliant catch by Hussey cut his innings short. Jaques Kallis (0) was run out without facing a single delivery, courtesy of a brilliant throw by Badrinath. Dwayne Bravo then turned the match on its head first having Morgan (2) caught before running out Pathan (25) to leave KKR stuttering at 55 for 4 in 8 overs. Debabrata Das (19) launched Ashwin for a six before the bowler came back to trap him leg before. Ashwin then had Manoj Tiwary (13) caught in the deep. The collapse continued as Jadeja struck twice to dismiss Rajat Bhatia (1) and Laxmi Shukla (1). Narine played a short cameo hitting two sixes before holing out to give Jadeja his third wicket. KKR eventually finished at 119 for 9 from 20 overs. Man-of-the-Match: Ravindra Jadeja Brief Scores: Kolkata Knight Riders 119 for 9 (Gautam Gambhir 25, Ravindra Jadeja 3-20) lost to Chennai Super Kings 124 for 6 (Michael Hussey 40, Yusuf Pathan 1-9) by 4 wickets. Stats Highlights: 257.14: Ravindra Jadeja's strike-rate in the match (36* off 14 balls) – best for any batsman facing at least 10 balls in a match in IPL 2013. 174.62: Jadeja's strike-rate in IPL 2013 – best for any batsman facing at least 50 balls in the tournament. Fellow team-mate MS Dhoni is second with 159.78 78.43: Mike Hussey's strike-rate – worst for any batsman in IPL in an innings of 50 balls or more. Kolkata Knight Riders' Manoj Tiwary had a strike-rate of 90.19 (46 off 51 balls) against Kochi Tuskers Kerala in 2011. 50: Number of matches won by MS Dhoni as a captain in IPL – first player to do so. 2: Number of times Jadeja has scored 25 runs and taken 3 wickets in a match in IPL. He now joins Yuvraj Singh, Shane Watson and Kieron Pollard in doing so most often. Presentation Jadeja is Man of the Match. Jadeja: "It was crucial for us to win this game. There was not enough time to think when I went in, I decided to see it and hit it. I tried to bowl slower in the air, which worked. I played few good shots for my team." MS Dhoni: "We did not bat well, it is one area where we would like to be more consistent. They batted brilliantly first six overs, few wickets and run-outs brought us back. Bringing the spinners late helped us to rotate. People think it is a T20 game, you have to slog everything, it is not like that. There are two types of batsmen, one who don't think and go after everything, and others who plan and target bowlers. We want him [Jadeja] to be really comfortable in the dressing room. He is loving the part where we are calling him Sir, but it is the one from Hindi [meaning head] and not from English. I don't think he knows that." Gautam Gambhir: "Some schoolboy errors to be honest. When you bat first, you cannot be 46 for 1 and then 91 for 8. The pitch gets better under lights. Both Senanayake and Narine did a fantastic job by taking it till the last over. We have not been professional enough and not been upto the mark. You cannot expect your bowlers to defend 119 on such a beautiful wicket." source: iplt20.com |
We need to work on our batting: KKR Coach Trevor Bayliss Posted: 19 Apr 2013 10:14 PM PDT There was a cloud cover over the Eden Gardens on Friday, just a day before the big clash between defending champions Kolkata Knight Riders and last year's runners-up Chennai Super Kings. There was a possibility of some rain according to the locals here, but that did not dampen the hopes of the Knight Riders who were seen practicing hard at the nets. The Knights are back at their den after a four run loss against Kings XI Punjab that left the side gutted. Coach Trevor Bayliss said, "I think the boys in the dressing room after the game were hurt. They realised that they had left one slip away. It was good to see the hurt on their faces because you could see it meant that much to them. They were embarrassed by the way they let that game slip. But, I don't think there will be a problem in the effort they put in the game tomorrow." Their opponents, Chennai Super Kings though, are coming off a comprehensive victory against the Delhi Daredevils and there will be no doubts that the men in yellow will be upbeat even though they are playing KKR at home. Bayliss felt, it could be a tight contest against CSK. "The games we played against CSK last year were all nail biting finishes and we look forward to a similar contest tomorrow as well." Spin has been the Knight Riders' strength this competition as Sunil Narine has proved to be their most lethal weapon in the bowling attack. Add a Sachithra Senanayake to it and you can have the deadliest spin combination in the competition. When asked if there will be any change in the strategy against CSK who play spin well, Bayliss said "We just concentrate on what we do well. Our strength is spin bowling and we do not think of changing it too much according to the opposition. It is something that we have spoken about and we do have some options in terms of deciding the combinations we might play whether it is this game or for the future games." KKR have been highly dependent on their top four of the batting line up to get runs on the board, and batting has been an area of concern for them. The coach was of the view that it was time for the lower order to making meaningful contributions as well. "The batting has been a bit of a problem. In twenty over games sometimes, players do not get much of an opportunity to bat in the middle and it is tough to get in touch when you are not there for all that long. Last year we got a lot of runs at the top of the order and to be honest we need a lot of runs from the bottom three or four. They need to come up with those crucial fifteens, twenties and thirties in short space of time in the end which will get us to a good score. Once they start hitting the ball in the middle, am sure their form will come." Talking about form, there has been concerns over Yusuf Pathan's form as well. Pathan has just scored 61 in the five games so far, but Bayliss was in full support for his match winner. "We are looking at Yusuf and trying to work with him to find the best way for him to score runs. We might use him in a different fashion in the next game or two. We know he is a match winner when he comes off and hopefully it is not long before he scores well for us. I have been watching him bat in the nets and I feel he is striking the ball a lot better than last year." Will there be a few changes in the next game? Will we see Brendon McCullum back in the squad? "I cannot say he will not play, but there might be a chance that he will play. It is a fifty-fifty chance. There is a possibility that there might be changes. We will get together tomorrow before the game and work out the combinations that we are looking for and then make changes if need be," answered Bayliss. source: iplt20.com |
Cheap wickets concern David Hussey: SRH vs KXIP Posted: 19 Apr 2013 10:09 PM PDT When you have David Hussey – world's third-highest run-getter in Twenty20 cricket – and Adam Gilchrist – the most destructive wicketkeeper-batsman of his time – in the top-four of your line-up, you don't expect to lose matches on account of your batting. But that's exactly what has happened with Kings XI Punjab this IPL season. In five matches so far, KXIP have crossed the 140-run mark only once. Their latest batting implosion came in Hyderabad, as they lost five wickets for 27 runs in four overs. Although the Sunrisers Hyderabad – who themselves are trying to find answers to their batting woes – lost five wickets, they never once looked uncomfortable chasing 124. After the loss, KXIP's senior batsman, David Hussey, admitted in his chat with iplt20.com that it's high time the batsmen, starting with himself, start putting a price-tag on their wicket. Hussey hoped Adam Gilchrist's 25-ball 26 was a sign of a purple patch for the veteran opener. The younger of the Hussey brothers praised his elder sibling, Michael, for his fine run with the Chennai Super Kings and told us who his top-three pairs of brother are in IPL 2013. Leaving the last game against KKR aside, the batting hasn't quite packed the punch. What's the reason? We're just not taking responsibility of our wickets. When you're four down with four overs to go, you think you'll post a big score but we keep getting out in poor ways. We've really got to learn and rectify that problem straight away, or it's going to be a very long tournament for us. Something that was visible today as well, the batsmen who are getting the starts are not batting on for long. Is there a talk in the dressing room over that? Yes, there is a bit of a talk. No batsman from our team has yet scored a fifty and we have to change that very soon. We have the batsmen to do that. The way Adam Gilchrist batted today I thought he's going to be one of our better batsmen going forward in the tournament. You've scored a couple of 40s, Gilchrist has hit a bit of form too. Is it time for the two of you to lead from the front? Yes, it is. We really need to get those big 50s and 70s and give our bowlers a decent total to bowl to. The bowlers have been fantastic and now it's up to the batsmen to put their hands up. Are you the fielding captain of the team? Yes, I am. I am the captain in the field and it's my responsibility to get the best fielders in the right positions. It's up to the bowlers to bowl whatever they want to and it's then our job to create an atmosphere and cause a few run-outs. Of the two Hussey brothers David is considered as a T20 master and Michael has always been a Test specialist. But he's catching up with you well? He's a fantastic cricketer in all three formats. I watched him last night play against Delhi Daredevils (where he scored a 50-ball 65) and he batted superbly. I hope he keeps doing well but CSK keep losing games. That would be nice. Which pair of brothers is the best this IPL? Don't be modest, be honest. I'll give you my top three. No.3 the Marsh brothers, No.2 the Morkel brothers and No.1 the McCullum brothers. I think they're the benchmark. source: iplt20.com |
Amit Mishra equalled Lasith Malinga as the highest wicket-taker in IPL Posted: 19 Apr 2013 10:00 PM PDT Why bother with mystery when you can bewilder them with simplicity? That could well have been the theme of celebration when Amit Mishra (11 scalps) regained the Purple Cap from Sunil Narine (10 scalps) with his two wickets against KXIP. Of a breed getting as extinct as the Bengal Tiger, Mishra has proved the adage, 'T20 cricket is tough work for leg-spinners because they tend to go for runs' wrong with his scintillating IPL performances for the Surisers Hyderabad. In a format which makes spinners run for cover, Mishra stuck to his instinct – to go for wickets. As a result, he has equalled Lasith Malinga as the highest wicket-taker in IPL with 85 scalps. We, at iplt20.com quizzed the leg-spinner from Haryana about his approach and style of bowling in this format, his young leggie partner at SRH and his conversation with the legendary Pakistan leg-spinner, Mushtaq Ahmed, currently the bowling mentor of the Delhi Daredevils. The Purple Cap is back on your head. It seems to like it up there? It feels really great, especially because my performance is helping the team win. It's fun celebrating your own performance only after you've won as a team. Whatever hard work I put into my game is paying off here fortunately. In this format you can be taken for runs anytime. But we have played seven matches and my performance has been good so far. It's a good feeling to be consistent in this fickle format. With 85 wickets you have equalled Lasith Malinga as the all-time highest IPL wicket-taker. Were you aware of it? No, I knew I was placed second but it's good to know that I have equalled him now. The best players from all over the world come together in the IPL and to perform well here is a big achievement for me. They say it's very difficult for leg-spinners to succeed in the T20 format because they tend to go for runs. What is your secret? My only secret is that I always bowl to my strength. I know and everyone tells me that I am a wicket-taking bowler. So, I work more on my wicket-taking skills. I believe getting wickets is the best way to put the pressure on the batting side in the T20 format. What kind of changes do you bring about when bowling in the shortest format? I do bring in a lot of changes. I keep varying the pace, use the googly more often, bowl topspin, flipper, etc. Like that the batsman will not be at ease knowing what's coming his way. The idea is to keep him guessing. What's your take on the young leg-spinner in SRH, Karan Sharma? He's a good bowler and has a lot of potential. The good thing is that we're bowling well in tandem. We talk a lot to each other about our bowling. These days it's very rare to have two leggies playing together in one side. Do you enjoy having someone around who knows your art? I really do, actually. Whenever I see a new leg-spinner, I love to know about his bowling and how he does things differently from me. I always keep talking to him about the variations he has and the new innovations he is developing. The more variety and knowledge you have, it's better for you as a spinner. Have you had any interactions with Mushtaq Ahmed? I spoke to him for a bit when we played against the Daredevils in Delhi. I am looking forward to talking to him at length about my bowling and leg-spin bowling in general when DD come to play in Hyderabad. I just want to ask him about my flaws and how I can improve as a bowler. As a bowling unit, how confident do you all feel to know that you have been winning matches for the team in a batsman's format? Every team has a strong area and so far for us it has been our bowling. Our batting hasn't been doing too well but I am sure that we will get better in that aspect in the coming games. Honestly, we have been a bit stuck up in our batting. But we are working hard on it and are confident the results will show soon. source: iplt20.com |
SRH vs KXIP - M25 Report & Stats: IPL 2013 Posted: 19 Apr 2013 09:46 PM PDT Match Report: Sunrisers Hyderabad continued their winning streak at home with a convincing five wicket win over Kings XI Punjab. The SRH bowlers once again put on a magnificent display, before their batsmen led by Hanuma Vihari and Thisara Perera saw them home. Vihari (46) was caught by David Hussey as he played an uppish drive off Chawla. Needing 36 runs off 30 balls, SRH lost Cameron White (16) as Gony made a mess of his stumps. Mahmood trapped Biplab Samantray (10) leg before the very next over. With 18 runs off the final two overs, Perera (23*) hit Mahmood for three huge sixes to finish the match in style. SRH reached the target with seven balls remaining. Earlier KXIP won the toss and elected to bat first. They lost Mandeep Singh (10) early when Ishant Sharma struck. After a slow start, Adam Gilchrist got a move on smashing three boundaries off Thisara Perera's 6th over. At the end of the power play, KXIP were 36 for 1. With runs difficult to come by, Gilchrist (26) tried to break the shackles and attempted a big hit off Karan Sharma, only to be caught at deep midwicket. Paul Valthaty (6) perished soon after caught by Perera off Karan Sharma to leave KXIP at 48 for 3 in 9 overs. Promoted up the order, Chawla launched Karan Sharma for two massive sixes in the 11th over. Hussey joined in by slamming Ishant Sharma over the mid-wicket fence. KXIP lost Chawla (23) to a run out affected by Perera to peg them onto the back-foot yet again. Gurkeerat Singh ((17) got on with the task straight away hitting Mishra for a six. Hussey (22) then fell trying to accelerate off Ishant Sharma. The KXIP lower order then capitulated as they lost four wickets in five deliveries to leave them in disarray. They eventually finished at 123 for 9 from their 20 overs. Brief Scores: Kings XI Punjab 123 for 9 (Adam Gilchrist 26, Karan Sharma 2-19) lost to Sunrisers Hyderabad 127-5 in 18.5 Overs (Hanuma Vihari 46, Manpreet Gony 2-24) by 5 wickets. Stats Highlights: 85: Number of wickets taken by Amit Mishra, equaling Lasith Malinga's record of taking most wickets in IPL. 68: The percentage of matches in IPL 2013, won by the home sides – 17 out of 25. 9: Number of sixes hit by Thisara Perera in IPL 2013 – two more than number of boundary fours he has hit! 4: Number of wickets lost by Kings XI Punjab in 4 balls while adding just one run to the total – from 114/5 to 115/9. 3: Number of matches won by Deccan Chargers in 18 matches played at Hyderabad. Sunrisers Hyderabad have won three out of three! 2: Number of batsmen to get dismissed without facing a ball in IPL 2013. Manpreet Gony emulated Amit Mishra, who had suffered the similar fate against Royal Challengers Bangalore at Bangalore. 1: Adam Gilchrist won his first toss in five games in IPL 2013. Gilchrist: Losing those wickets was the turning point, looked good to get to 140 then we lost four wickets for nothing. It's about getting the consistency, the bowlers are doing a good job but the batsmen keep letting them down. White: We like the close games, don't we? 140 was always going to be tough chase as Adam said. Vihari's had a nice tournament so far which is a good thing about the IPL, allowing youngsters to perform. The bowlers are doing a good job, Mishy, Ishant, Dale, Karan. Takes a bit of skill to hit those sixes. Vihari gets the man of the match award: Very happy with the performance, most importantly, the team won. I don't mind bowling just one over, important to bowl it well. For this wicket, the target was very suitable for, sad that I couldn't see it through. source: iplt20.com |
