MS Dhoni may be back for final against Sri Lanka: Tri-Series 2013 Posted: 10 Jul 2013 11:07 PM PDT India and Sri Lanka meet yet again, this time in the final of the Tri-Nation Series at Queen's Park Oval on Thursday, amid increasing speculation that Mahendra Singh Dhoni will be back to the lead the World Cup and Champions Trophy holders. (Also Read: Preview: India vs Sri Lanka - Final - Tri-Series 2013) Dhoni sustained a right hamstring strain while batting against the West Indies in his team's first match of the tournament on June 30 at Sabina Park in Kingston and an announcement was made the following day that he was ruled out of the rest of the competition with uncapped batsman Ambati Rayudu being flown in as his replacement. However India's most successful captain ever has remained with the squad, and while there has as yet been no official word from the touring party, his presence on the field in pre-match warm-ups and in full team uniform during and after the final preliminary fixture against the Sri Lankans on Tuesday increase the likelihood that he will be back as at the helm for the final. Stand-in captain Virat Kohli hinted as much at the toss ahead of the comprehensive victory over Angelo Mathews's side when he expressed hope that Dhoni had been recovering well enough to be able to play if they had gotten through to the final. Should he be passed fit, it is expected that Murali Vijay will make way for the man increasingly regarded as the finest international captain in the contemporary game. With or without Dhoni though, India are bracing for a much tougher Sri Lankan challenge than what transpired on Tuesday when fast-medium bowler Bhuvneshwar Kumar produced the outstanding figures of four for eight and engineered the demolition of the 1996 World Cup winners for just 96. Sri Lanka had all but qualified for the final ahead of that encounter and their performance with the bat on the way to an 81-run defeat on the Duckworth/Lewis Scoring Method reflected a noticeable lack of intensity that is not expected to be repeated in the final. They have their own injury concerns with a question mark lingering over the availability of fast-medium bowler Nuwan Kulasekara, who injured a finger on his left hand while attempting to take a return catch of Chris Gayle in the match against the West Indies that concluded on Monday. Given the almost inevitable intervention of inclement weather at the start of the rainy season in the Caribbean, the toss is again expected to be a key factor on Thursday morning while both teams will be tailoring their tactics in keeping with the unsettled conditions in the air and the green, seamer-friendly pitch that should make for an intriguing duel. | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
Preview: India vs Sri Lanka - Final - Tri-Series 2013 Posted: 10 Jul 2013 11:08 PM PDT Final of the Celkon Mobile Cup, between India and Sri Lanka Where The Queen's Park, Port of Spain, Trinidad When Thursday, July 11, 2013 The Teams India They suffered defeats in their first two matches, lost their captain MS Dhoni due to injury for the rest of the series and then faced a must-win situation to make the final. Since then, Virat Kohli and his young turks have shown tremendous character and skill to overcome all odds and book a place in the final of the tri-nation series. (Also Read: MS Dhoni may be back for final against Sri Lanka: Tri-Series 2013) The final will mark the 49th India-Sri Lanka cricketing contest since 2009. A superior ODI record against their familiar foes will augment India's confidence. They might also receive another massive boost if, as hinted by Virat, MS Dhoni takes field. The Indian captain was earlier ruled out of the series with a hamstring injury. Sri Lanka The team from the Emerald Iles has blown hot and cold in the series with extreme performances. Against India, they lost the last league game by 81 runs, after winning the first contest between these two sides convincingly. Sri Lanka will do well to keep in mind their recent unimpressive track record against India in big games and ensure they don't make similar mistakes again. On a sluggish and damp Trinidad wicket, the senior batsmen will have to put their hands up if their side is to come out on top. Key Players India Bhuvneshwar Kumar proved to be the difference between the two sides in the previous match and he will once again play a crucial role, given his style of bowling. Not express, but accurate and street smart, Bhuvneshwar will be the key for India on a slow track and under an overcast sky. Sri Lanka's top-order batsmen will be wary of the young Indian medium pacer. Sri Lanka The onus to score runs in difficult conditions will have to be taken up by the experienced heads in the batting line-up. The top three Lankan batsmen – Upul Tharanga, Mahela Jayawardene and Kumar Sangakkara – will do well to see off the tough first few overs and deny India's new-ball bowlers a breakthrough. With rain in the air, the value of a strong foundation and wickets in hand cannot be underestimated. New Zealand Under-19 vs India Under-19 Tri-Nation Tournament 2013 Posted: 10 Jul 2013 10:41 PM PDT Medium pacer Deepak Hooda (3/26) led an impressive Indian bowling performance that paved the way for an easy seven-wicket win over New Zealand in an U-19 Tri-series match, here on Wednesday. (Also Read: Australia Under-19 vs India Under-19 Tri-Nation Tournament 2013) After bowling out New Zealand for 119 in 47.2 overs, India chased down the total with as many as 155 balls remaining at the Marrara Oval here. (Also Read: India Under-19 vs New Zealand Under-19 Tri-Nation Tournament 2013) New Zealand, after electing to bat, got off to a reasonably good start with openers Rakitha Weerasundara and Tim Seifert putting on 34 in 9.2 overs for the first wicket. (Also Read: India Under-19 vs Australia Under-19 Tri-Nation Tournament 2013) But once Seifert (5) was dismissed by Abhimanyu Lamba, the Kiwis faltered badly and were reduced to 68 for five in 26.2 overs. Middle order batsmen Graeme Tryon and Kyle Jamieson battled hard at the crease putting on a 35-run stand in 83 balls for the sixth wicket. Jamieson was the highest run-scorer for his side, with 34 off 61 deliveries while Tryon took 47 ball to make 14 runs. After that the Indian bowlers quickly folded the Kiwi lower-order. Besides Hooda, off-spinner Aamir Gani (2/15) and Kuldeep Yadav (1/13) were the other successful bowlers for India. In reply, India lost opener Shreyas Iyer (4) early but skipper Vijay Zol (46 not out) joined hands first with opener Akhil Herwadkar (25) and then with Sanju Samson (23), adding 37 and 48 runs respectively to take his side home. For New Zealand, spinner Dane Watson took two wickets while Jamieson got one Indian batsman out. |
