India Under-19 vs New Zealand Under-19 Tri-Nation Tournament 2013 Posted: 05 Jul 2013 03:24 AM PDT Darwin, Australia: Skipper Vijay Zol continued his fine form as his century helped India colts thrash New Zealand by a whopping margin of 165 runs to register their third victory in an U-19 Tri-series match being heled here on Thursday. The left-hander and senior-most player in the side, Zol smashed 128 off 131 balls to power India to 276 for six in 50 overs and then bowlers produced a fine effort to skittle out New Zealand for 111 in 42 overs. The victory has all but sealed India's place in the final of the tournament. (Also Read: India Under-19 vs Australia Under-19 Tri-Nation Tournament 2013) After an early dismissal of opener Ankush Bains (5), Zol in company of Mumbai youngster Akhil Herwadkar (55, 73 balls, 6x4) added 105 runs for the second wicket to steady the innings. During his knock, the stylish Maharashtra left-hander Zol hit 16 boundaries and a big six. Medium pacer Kyle Jamieson (0/51 in 6 overs) got some harsh treatment from the two Indian batsmen. (Also Read: India Under-19 vs Papua New Guinea Under-19 Tri-Nation Tournament 2013) After Herwadkar's dismissal, Sanju Samson (11) and Mohammed Saif (17) didn't last long as India were in a spot of bother at 171 for four but Zol found an able ally in Sarfaraz Khan who hit a quickfire 29-ball-30. More importantly, he was involved in a 94-run stand for the fifth wicket with his skipper which took India past 250-run mark. With the pitch at the Marrara Cricket Ground assisting seamers, India's quartet of left-arm seamers Chama Milind (2/16), Kuldeep Yadav (3/22) along with right-arm medium fast bowlers Abhimanyu Lamba (2/21) and Atul Singh (1/14) ran through the Kiwis top-order. After losing six wickets for only 35 runs, there was no chance of making a comeback and Indians coasted to an easy victory. Only Ken McClure (41) provided some lone resistance. Brief Scores: India U-19 276/6 in 50 overs (Vijay Zol 128, Akhil Herwadkar 55, Kurtley Watson 2/32). New Zealand 111 all out in 42 overs (Ken McClure 41, Kuldeep Yadav 3/22, Chama Milind 2/16, Abhimanyu Lamba 2/21). India U-19 won by 165 runs. |
Ashwin is an excellent All-Rounder Spinner: Saqlain Mushtaq Posted: 04 Jul 2013 09:36 PM PDT Former Pakistan off spinner Saqlain Mushtaq believes Ravichandran Ashwin is a complete bowler who can do well in all three formats. Ashwin who has taken 92 wickets in 16 Tests and 76 in 54 ODIs is currently playing in the tri-series that features India, Sri Lanka and West Indies. His performance in the Champions Trophy in particular, impressed Mushtaq. Talking to pakpassion.net, Mushtaq said, "Ravichandran Ashwin, Ravindra Jadeja and Sunil Narine were the three spinners who really impressed me during the Champions Trophy. Ashwin, in my opinion, is an excellent all-round spinner who performs well in Test cricket too, not just the shorter formats. "Jadeja and Narine, however are yet to master bowling in Test cricket, which requires the utilisation of a very different set of skills which they are yet to demonstrate." Apart from the orthodox off break, Ashwin has an armoury that features the carrom ball and a delivery stride in which he pauses just before releasing the ball. Mushtaq believes that as long as the pause in the delivery stride is working for Ashwin and as long as it remains legal, he should continue to bowl it. "It's currently within the rules of the game. Whether this is changed in future is of course up to the ICC [International Cricket Council]. I'd encourage spinners to innovate at every opportunity and if the pause delivery is working and confusing the batsmen, then keep on bowling it as part of your armoury. "Bowlers don't always get the rub of the green when it comes to rules in cricket, but the pause delivery is one that they can use to confuse some batsmen," Mushtaq said. Mushtaq took 208 wickets in his 49 Tests for Pakistan, however, his limited overs record was what made him a formidable off spinner. His 288 wickets in 169 ODIs came at an average of 21.78 and in the process he became the fastest bowler to get to 100 ODI wickets. |
Virat Kohli and Team fined for slow over-rate against Sri Lanka Posted: 04 Jul 2013 09:32 PM PDT Kingston, Jamaica: India's stand-in captain Virat Kohli has been fined 20 per cent of his match fees and his team-mates 10 per cent for maintaining a slow over rate in their Tri-nation ODI series match against Sri Lanka. India were handed an embarrassing 165-run defeat by the Sri Lankans in the match that took place at the Sabina Place on Tuesday. "In accordance with the ICC Code of Conduct for Players and Player Support Personnel, and in particular the regulations contained therein governing minor over-rate offences, players are fined 10 per cent of their match fees for every over their side fails to bowl in the allotted time, with the captain fined double that amount," the ICC said in a statement. "As such, Kohli was fined 20 per cent of his match fee while his team mates received 10 per cent fines," it added. (Also Read: India vs Sri Lanka: Tri Series 2013 - Statistical Highlights) Jeff Crowe, of the Emirates Elite Panel of ICC Match Referees, imposed the fines after Kohli's side was ruled to be one over short of its target, after time allowances were taken into consideration. (Also Read: India vs Sri Lanka: Tri Series 2013 - Report) "The offence is contrary to Article 2.5.1 of the Code. The penalty was accepted by India without contest so there was no need for a hearing," the statement further said.
