India Under-19 vs Australia Under-19 Tri-Nation Tournament 2013

India continued their recent run of form against the Australian U19 team with a 47-run win in the Under 19 International Series at Marrara Oval in Darwin today.

India's bowlers got the best of Australia's U19 batsmen, sparking a dramatic collapse late in the day. Australia appeared on track to reach India's total of 221, before losing six wickets for 19 runs and finishing all out for 174. Ben McDermott batted well for his half-century, but the remainder of Australia's young line-up were restricted from capitalising on their starts due to India's impressive bowling. Kuldeep Yadav led the way with figures of 3/19.

Earlier, Australia won the toss and elected to bowl on what looked to be a variable wicket. India's openers proved up to the task, looking ominous early and untroubled by Darwin's sub-continental-like conditions.

Wickets were hard to come by for the Aussies, but their perseverance was rewarded following Matthew Kelly's dismal of top-scorer and Player of the Match Ankush Bains (64 from 100 balls) in the 39th over.

For the second match in a row, Australia's bowlers built the pressure and bowled well at the death, taking seven wickets in the last 10 overs to dismiss India for 221 all out.

Cam Valente (3/39) and Gabe Bell (3/34) were the pick of the Aussie bowlers, with Kelly (2/45) and Matt Fotia (2/46) also sharing in the spoils.

Speaking after the match, Australian U19 batsman Ben McDermott said his team was disappointed with their first loss of the series.

"We batted really well in our first game on this wicket when we scored 226 and thought we could chase India's score down. We thought it was very gettable but it got away from us and we were a bit below par where we need to be with the bat today.

"Their spinners bowled really well and varied their pace, but given it was a second-day wicket and it was really hot, it was the right choice to bowl first. There's a lot for us to take out of this game, and on other day we can have a red-hot crack and try and get a win back against India," he said.

India are the reigning U19 ICC Cricket World Cup champions after beating out Australia in the final last year in August in Townsville.

In today's other U19 International Series match, New Zealand beat Papua New Guinea by 133 runs at Tracy Village in Darwin.

Big scores to Ken McClure (78) and Alec Hodgson (71) saw NZ to 9/259, though PNG's Kabua Morea (4/44) impressed with the ball. In reply, PNG were all out for 126.

Round 3 of the U19 International Series will get underway on Thursday, 4 July. New Zealand will play India at Marrara Oval, while Australia will take on Papua New Guinea in a friendly match at Gardens Oval in Darwin.

Brief scores: India U-19 221 all-out in 49.3 overs (Bains 64, Zol 46; Bell 34/3, Valente 39/3) beat Australia U-19 174 all-out in 47.1 overs (McDermott 50; Kuldeep Yadav 19/3)

Player of the Match: Ankush Bains for his 64-run knock

Preview: India vs Sri Lanka - Tri-Series 2013
What

Match 3 – India vs Sri Lanka – of the Tri-nation ODI tournament, also featuring hosts West Indies.

When

Tuesday, July 2, 2013

Where

Sabina Park, Kingston, Jamaica

The Teams

India

Riding high on their Champions Trophy triumph in England, the Indians flattered to deceive in their opening game of this tri-series. Barring Rohit Sharma (60) and Suresh Raina (44), the batting misfired. The bowlers did force the West Indies No.11 batsman at the crease while defending a modest total, but failed to deal the vital blow. Going into their second match of the tournament, India will experience a further setback with the absence of captain MS Dhoni. The Sri Lankans will surely look to exploit this situation as the Indians take the field without their astute skipper and master finisher. Sri Lanka

Like India, the Sri Lankan team too fell victim to the sluggish Sabina Park wicket and the West Indian bowlers in their first match of the series. While Mahela Jayawardene and Angelo Mathews did score a fifty each, Chris Gayle and Johnson Charles have shown in the first two matches that the key to posting a good score is one batsman dropping anchor for most of the innings.

Key Players

India

Besides their biggest nemesis, Virat Kohli, Sri Lanka will be wary of Rohit and Raina, given their current form. The two, on the other hand, will be hoping to convert their starts into big scores and hold the innings together.

Sri Lanka

Sri Lanka will require the sagacity of either Jayawardene or Kumar Sangakkara, if not both, at the crease for the longest possible time as they take on an attack that has a good mix of pace and spin bowling to suit the conditions on offer.

Pitch and conditions

The conditions at Sabina Park have meant batsmen have struggled for fluency in the first half of the match and they are likely to stay the same. It is a slow pitch with some lateral movement early on, but it eases out during the second half. Just like West Indies did both times, the team that wins the toss will prefer to field.

Stats and trivia
  • India and Sri Lanka have played 41 ODIs against each other in the last five years - that is 15 more than the next most-prolific match-up of Bangladesh-Zimbabwe. Overall, the two teams have met each other 140 times in ODIs, also a record. Australia-West Indies have played against each other 135 times.
  • It's not a surprise then that three Sri Lankans and four Indians have scored more than 1000 runs in such contests in the last five years, the top-seven batting efforts against a particular team. Shane Watson, with 930 runs against England, is the eighth batsman in this list.
  • The India and Sri Lanka bowlers haven't done quite as well as their batting counterparts. It's understandable since most of these matches are played on flat wickets. For wickets taken against a particular opposition in the last five years, three Sri Lanka bowlers are in the top 10 for doing it against India. Lasith Malinga is there, too, but the opposition in his case is Australia. Only one India bowler - Zaheer Khan v Sri Lanka - makes it to the list.

Praveen Kumar Eyes India Comeback Through 2013-14 Domestic Season

Posted: 01 Jul 2013 09:26 PM PDT

Praveen-Kumar

Out of the national fold for more than a year, fast bowler Praveen Kumar has set his eyes on the 2013-14 domestic season to make a comeback to the Indian team.

"I am fit. I have fully recovered from my tennis elbow. I am bowling well these days. I am now eying a comeback to the Indian team by putting up a consistent performance in the domestic circuit," said Praveen at the Petroleum Sports Promotion Board awards in New Delhi on Monday.

Praveen, who missed the 2011 World Cup, had fruitful tours of West Indies and England in 2011, but then missed the tour of Australia due to a injury.

He played in the Commonwealth Bank series last year, the 2012 Asia Cup and the this year's IPL for the Kings XI Punjab, but due to a dip in form he has not played any international cricket since then.

Praveen also lauded Mahendra Singh Dhoni-led young Indian team for winning the just-concluded ICC Champions Trophy.

"It was good to see young Indian players taking up responsibility in the Champions Trophy. It was good that we won the last edition of the tournament," he said.

Praveen also had words of appreciation for his city-mate Bhuveneshwar Kumar, who has of late cemented his place in Indian pace attack.

"He (Bhuvneshwar) is a smart cricketer. He is smart enough to know his strengths. He bowled really well in English conditions," he said.
