KKR's Ryan ten Doeschate – The Frequent Flying Dutchman Posted: 09 May 2013 10:27 PM PDT Not many cricketers can boast a resume as colourful as that of Ryan ten Doeschate. The South African-born Dutch cricketer has played for nearly a dozen top-level teams across four continents and is currently plying his trade for the Kolkata Knight Riders in IPL 2013. He has also played international cricket for the Netherlands – he holds the world record for the highest batting average of 67.00. Despite the rigours of competitive cricket, a frequent flyer like ten Doeschate relishes travelling to different countries and playing in disparate conditions. However, he especially enjoys playing in the IPL and cites winning the league title with KKR in 2012 as one of the highlights of his career. The 32-year-old spoke to IPLT20.com after his side overcame the Pune Warriors India, in a match in which ten Doeschate chipped in with a valuable 31 runs off 21 balls. Here are excerpts from his interview: You have played for various teams across the globe. Currently, how many sides do you play for? Currently, I play for probably three or four. But I have played for about 10 or 11 teams during my career while travelling across the world, like to India, Australia, Bangladesh, England, Zimbabwe, South Africa and New Zealand. And I have played international cricket as well for the Netherlands. How do you cope – mentally and physically – with all the travel involved? Well, first of all, I love it. So that makes a big difference. A lot of guys don't enjoy staying in hotels and moving around all the time; whereas I actually cherish going to different places and travelling. And what about getting used to different playing conditions in different countries? I haven't always adapted too well to different conditions, in particular in Australia with the extra bounce. How do you rate your IPL experience as compared to the other leagues in which you have played? You just can't compare the fan following here (to any other place). Also, the way the teams look after you is great. The owners and the staff take care of you, and that makes the experience incomparable. What has been the crowning glory of you career so far? On a personal level, my 100 against England in India, in the 2011 World Cup, that was special. Also, winning the IPL last year was special, so were winning a couple of tournaments with Essex back home. Growing up did you only focus on cricket or was there any other sport you fancied? I played other sports like rugby and soccer apart from cricket. But competitively, I played rugby and cricket. As a batting all-rounder, how much do you focus on the bowling aspect? I have struggled a bit with my bowling. But I tend to work very hard at it. You have got to adapt all the time. Since I don't have a lot of pace, I have to bowl wisely. So I'm always trying to find ways to bowl better that way. How much pressure has there been on you and your team as defending champions this year? We have always tried to use it in a positive way. I don't think we have done particularly badly this year. I just don't think we have won crucial moments of the game. However, we have certainly channeled the pressure of being defending champions into a way that would work out for us this year. After today's performance, do you think you are the missing link in the KKR line-up? No, I wouldn't say that. There are obviously a lot of good international players here. Like when I come in, a quality player like Ryan McLaren has to sit out. So you have got to wait your turn. And that is probably one of the toughest things you have to do, as you have got stay fresh and stay ready (for when your turn comes). That is the hard part about being in a group of eight or nine good overseas guys like in KKR. Apart from swinging a cricket bat, you are also known for swinging clubs on the fairway. Is your golf swing anywhere as good as your big hitting? I have been winning all the friendly prizes with my teammates here so far. For me, golf is definitely a great escape from cricket; it's very competitive, but at the same time it can be very relaxing. source: iplt20.com |
Parvez Rasool Interview about his IPL Debut Posted: 09 May 2013 10:18 PM PDT The game between the Pune Warriors India and the Kolkata Knight Riders marked the much-anticipated debut of Jammu & Kashmir all-rounder Parveez Rasool. The 24-year-old made quite an impression with his economical four-over spell during which he conceded only 23 runs and picked the prized scalp of Jacques Kallis. (Also Read: PWI vs KKR - M56 Report & Stats: IPL 2013) Rasool was visibly proud and thrilled about finally getting a shot at the big leagues. After the game he spoke to IPLT20.com about what playing in the IPL means to him. He also dedicated his maiden performance to all his fans across India and the people of the state of Jammu & Kashmir. Here are excerpts from Rasool's exclusive interview: What does it feel like to finally make your IPL debut? I feel really great today. First of all, thanks to Almighty Allah, I have made it this far. It felt really nice to get an opportunity in the IPL and be able to perform at this level. What do you have to say about your first ever IPL wicket – that of Jacques Kallis? Jacques Kallis is definitely a legend; the best all-rounder in cricket. So, it felt really good to get his wicket. After that, I also got a caught behind shout, but unfortunately my appeal was turned down by the umpire. But that happens sometimes. However, Jacques Kallis' wicket was something truly special for me. When did you come to know you were going to play against KKR? I just came to know this morning, and I was really happy and excited at the prospect of playing today (Thursday). I was training real hard for whenever I would get the chance to play for PWI. And I wanted to make sure I grabbed that chance with both hands. Were you nervous while bowling your first ball? Yes, the first couple of balls I was nervous. Then Yuvi Paaji (Yuvraj Singh) came over to me and helped me settle down. While bowling, you adjusted your line for right-handers and left-handers. Was there a plan to that effect? There was a specific plan I was going by. For left-handers, my plan was to bowl on their legs, which makes it difficult for them to play their shots freely. So, that is what I was doing. Do you see yourself as a batting or bowling all-rounder? Currently, I consider myself a bowling all-rounder. But when I started out, I was a batting all-rounder. However, I bat well too. But it depends on the chances I get to bat. I did get to face a few balls (against KKR), and it felt good to be out there in the middle. I will surely rise up to the batting challenge as well when I get a chance. What is next for Parvez Rasool now that you have made your IPL debut? Now my goal is to ensure I play well in every match I get to play. I want to do well for the team and for myself. I hope I play well enough to play for India some day. Is this the proudest day of your life? Yes, this is the proudest day of my life. And the whole of Jammu and Kashmir was watching today's match and I am proud of that. I would like to dedicate my debut performance to the entire state of Jammu & Kashmir and all the well-wishers all around India. source: iplt20.com |
Bhuvneshwar Kumar’s in-swinger is similar to mine: Praveen Kumar Posted: 09 May 2013 10:07 PM PDT Kings XI Punjab made a few changes in their batting along the way in IPL 2013, but the bowling has remained more or less constant. Led by Praveen Kumar, they have a solid Indian core group of pace bowlers with Parvinder Awana and Manpreet Gony as the other members. With 10 wickets in 12 matches at 6.77 runs per over, Praveen has been a handy swing bowler for KXIP. After their loss to Rajasthan Royals at home, Praveen spoke to iplt20.com about his performance in the tournament. He also spoke fondly about his young Uttar Pradesh team-mate, Bhuvneshwar Kumar, who has been a real find for India this season and will go with the National team to England for the Champions Trophy. You've been the leading bowler of KXIP this season. How are you feeling about your rhythm? I'm feeling good about it and really enjoying myself. It's been 11 matches and I am pretty pleased with my performance so far. The best thing about KXIP's bowling attack is that we're a core group of Indian bowlers. We also have a variety with two fast bowlers and one swing bowler. Someone bowls well in the death, someone gets the early breakthroughs. We have been working hard as a group. Being one of the consistent bowlers in IPL, what have you taken from this tournament? I learnt the technicalities of bowling much before I started playing the IPL. But what I have learnt from this tournament is to be accurate. The margin for error is very low in this format and you pay a much higher price for waywardness here. The success in implementing this comes from playing this format regularly. Is it difficult for a swing bowler like you to bowl at the death? It doesn't make a difference to me – I open the bowling and also bowl in the death and I don't think it's that hard. Yes, your strategy changes a lot when bowling in the end. You don't get the swing and you have to bowl a lot of Yorkers, slower balls and slower bouncers. You also have to practice more on death bowling in T20s. Bhuvneshwar Kumar considers you his bowling idol. What do you think of him? He's a very good lad. I have liked him since the day he came to our club in Victoria Bagh and since his Under-19 days. He's a hard-worker and I truly hope he achieves much more in his career. How do you think he will fare on the English wickets at the Champions Trophy and what advice would you give him? I would just tell him to go enjoy himself, try different food there and work hard on his game. About bowling and batting he knows very well what to do. What do you like the most about his bowling? He's very similar to you. Yes, he bowls very much like me. I like his in-swinger; he bowls it just like I do. As far as improvement is concerned, he will keep learning the more he plays. He is playing for India now and the learning opportunities will be many. source: iplt20.com |
PWI vs KKR - M56 Report & Stats: IPL 2013 Posted: 09 May 2013 09:51 PM PDT Match Report: Pune Warriors India's woeful run in the Pepsi IPL 2013 continued as they suffered a crushing 46-run defeat at the hands of Kolkata Knight Riders at the Subrata Roy Sahara Stadium in Pune. After KKR posted 152, their bowlers bowled out PWI for 106. Chasing 153, PWI started positively with two boundaries off Lakshmipathy Balaji in the second over. Aaron Finch (5), who survived a run out attempt off Jacques Kallis in the third over, was sent back bowled a few balls later. Balaji then struck, having Yuvraj Singh (1) caught behind in the next over to all but crush the hosts' hopes of getting to the target. PWI made 34 from their Power Play. Iqbal Abdulla sent back Udit Birla (7) as he knocked back his off-stump. The PWI batsmen struggled to get the bowlers away as the required run rate steadily rose. At the halfway stage, PWI were 49 for three, still requiring another 104 runs for a win. Abdulla had Robin Uthappa (31) caught by Gautam Gambhir at point in the eleventh to leave PWI four down. Angelo Mathews launched Rajat Bhatia for a six in the 14th over before the bowler came back to dismiss Mitchell Marsh (5), caught by Manoj Tiwary at the boundary. Needing 73 from 30 balls, Mathews (40) deposited Kallis into the stands twice before perishing trying to hit Narine over the stands. The PWI capitulation continued as Mahesh Rawat (5) was caught behind of Kallis before Narine had Wayne Parnell (5) caught in the deep. PWI were bundled out for 106, falling 46 runs short. Earlier KKR won the toss and elected to bat. Gambhir got going with two boundaries off Krishnakant Upadhyay in the second over. He continued attacking with consecutive boundaries off IPL debutant, Parvez Rasool. Kumar got the first breakthrough having Manvinder Bisla (12) stumped in the sixth over. KKR made 50 from their Power Play. Rasool then had Kallis (2) caught at cover. KKR were 66 for two at the halfway stage. PWI bowlers stifled the flow of runs, as the KKR batsmen struggled to find the boundary. Eoin Morgan hit Marsh straight to Uthappa at short fine-leg in the twelfth over to leave KKR three down. Marsh dismissed Gambhir soon after his half-century, caught by Angelo Mathews at short midwicket. Wickets continued to tumble as Yusuf Pathan (3) then fell caught behind off Kumar. Ryan ten Doeschate (31) took apart Mathews' 17th over for 17 runs, with a six and two boundaries. He followed that up with blasting Kumar for two boundaries before top-edging to Upadhyay. Bhatia (13*), with a boundary and a six in the final over, propelled KKR to 152 for six. Man-of-the-Match: Gautam Gambhir Brief Scores: Kolkata Knight Riders 152 for 6 (Gautam Gambhir 50, Bhuvneshwar Kumar 3-25) defeated Pune Warriors India 106 all out in 19.3 overs (Angelo Mathews 40, Lakshmipathy Balaji 3-19) by 46 runs. Presentation: Finch: We were very disappointing, 150 was too much on that wicket, did not bat too intelligently. We knew Narine was going to bat a few in the end and we had to cash in the first six. Gambhir, also the man of the match tonight: Professional cricket from everyone, played smart cricket and lot of credit to Tendo for the way he batted. The bowlers bowled well too. Need to take it one game at a time, need to play quality cricket because we have a lot of quality in the dressing room. source: iplt20.com |
KXIP vs RR - M55 Report & Stats: IPL 2013 Posted: 09 May 2013 09:18 PM PDT Match Report: Rajasthan Royals got a step closer to the Pepsi IPL 2013 Play-Offs with a comprehensive eight wicket win over Kings XI Punjab at the Punjab Cricket Association Stadium in Mohali. RR, after restricting KXIP to 145, chased it down on the back of a responsible, undefeated 59 by Ajinkya Rahane. Rahane, in full flow, stepped out and hit Manpreet Gony for a maximum over the long-off fence. Chawla who was hit for a boundary by Watson (31) came back to bowl him with a quicker delivery bowled seam up. At the halfway stage, RR were 73 for two, still requiring 73 runs. Sanju Vishwanadh and Rahane rotated the strike well and kept the scoreboard ticking. Rahane (59*) brought up his fifty with a brace off Parvinder Awana in the 17th over. He immediately slammed Awana over mid-wicket for a six. Vishwanadh (47*) then got into Gony, smashing him for a six and a boundary to see RR home at the end of the 19th over. Earlier, RR won the toss and elected to field. Ajit Chandila struck in the very first over as Mandeep Singh (0) was beaten by the flight and chipped one straight back to the bowler. KIXP got a move on after a quiet start with three boundaries off S Sreesanth in the fourth over. Adam Gilchrist, who returned to the team as captain hit consecutive boundaries off James Faulkner in the sixth over. Shaun Marsh then went after Chandila smashing him for a six and a boundary. At the halfway stage, KXIP were 74 for one. Marsh brought up his fifty with a flick to the boundary off Faulkner in the 13th over. Kevon Cooper brought RR back into the match as he picked up three wickets to derail the KXIP innings. He first deceived Gilchrist (42) to dismiss him caught and bowled. David Hussey (1) followed him bowled by his countryman Shane Watson. Marsh deposited Faulkner into the crowd before smashing him for a boundary in the 16th over. Cooper then struck twice dismissing Marsh (77) and David Miller (8) as RR dragged back the match. KXIP finally finished with 145 for six. Brief Scores: Kings XI Punjab 145 for 6 (Shaun Marsh 77; Kevon Cooper 3-23) lost to Rajasthan Royals 147 for 2 (Ajinkya Rahane 59*; Bipul Sharma 1-21) by 8 wickets 0: Number of boundaries hit by Kings XI Punjab in last four overs of their innings. 6: Rajasthan Royals have won all their six games while chasing a target in IPL2013. 7: Number of century partnerships involving Shaun Marsh. Only Chris Gayle is ahead of him with 10 such partnerships (Gautam Gambhir has also featured in seven stands of 100 or more). 24.09: Percent of Kings XI Punjab's runs have come from Shaun Marsh's bat (in matches in which he has played). Only Chris Gayle has scored a higher percentage of team runs in IPL – 27.90 38: Number of matches lost by Adam Gilchrist in IPL – most by any captain. Gilchrist: Pitch was slower than normal, made it difficult to hit boundaries. Wanted to get to 160 or so which would have been competitive. We have to win every game from here, we are familiar with this scenario and we hope to compete hard. Dravid: Proud of the way the guys played, they have been doing well all throughout. They responded well while bowling and batting. We hadn't been quite well in the death overs and we sat down and chatted about it, executed the plans well. Timed the chase well, could have been a tricky chase, Watson, Rahane and Samson timed it well. Something special about Samson, I hope he continues to go well. Cooper is the man of the match: Wasn't bowling last few games, I knew I had to do well here. Wicket was slow and it suited my bowling. We bowled well in partnerships. source: iplt20.com |
