Amazing to play with Sachin, Ponting: Glenn Maxwell Posted: 12 May 2013 11:17 PM PDT The Mumbai Indians moved a step closer to Play-Off qualification after they overcame the Pune Warriors India at the Subrata Roy Sahara Stadium. The other big story of this match was the much-anticipated franchise debut of MI's Million-Dollar Man, Glenn Maxwell. The Australian all-rounder finally got an opportunity in a crucial match, in which he played the finisher's role with the bat, after bowling a solitary, and economical, over during the PWI innings. Maxwell's cameos – both with bat and ball – exuded the kind of confidence that had eluded him during Australia's forgettable Test tour of India a couple of months ago. During his exclusive chat with IPLT20.com, the 24-year-old cited spending the better part of this year in the subcontinent as the reason behind his improved showing in his first IPL 2013 outing. He also talked about what it meant for him to be part of a set-up that includes some of cricket's biggest names. Here are excerpts from his exclusive interview: How does it feel to make your MI debut? A lot better, now that we have won (laughs). I have been waiting a really long time; I have been training hard in the nets and in the gym. So, I feel it was well-deserved and I am glad I got a crack out there and it was fun. Were there any special preparations ahead of your maiden cap for MI? No, Not really. Every game, I try and treat the same. When did you come to know that you were going to play? I actually found out before we had lunch today. I was a little bit wary because when I was told that, I was not sure (laughs). Yes, but my name was read out at the toss, and that is when I knew for sure I was going to play. You bowled a tidy over in the middle. Can we expect you to roll your arm more often in the games to come? At the moment with our team, I am just there to bowl if we need an extra bowler. So far we have been so good with our five regular bowlers that we don't need an extra bowler. I am just there if we need an extra over in case there are a few left-handers or if we just need someone to bowl an over to help out in the middle of the innings. Given that you batted confidently, are the memories of the India-Australia Test series (that the former won 4-0) distant now? Yes, they are pretty distant. Also, considering it is the white ball now, I am just trying to forget about the Test series. But I am sure those memories are anyway not going to help me. However, I am extremely proud that I made my Test debut against India in India. It was an amazing achievement for me personally, even though we did not win. And I did take with me a lot of that experience into the IPL. You have spent the better part of 2013 in India. Has that helped you get a leg up on the conditions on offer here? Exactly right. You get a leg up over everyone else by spending time here. I feel like I have had a lot of time for preparation, and I have played a lot here and trained a lot here. I feel these things are going to help me a lot in the future. There are a lot of tournaments in India throughout the year. So, you have got to adapt to playing here. It is a massive advantage to get used to the conditions over here. What is it like to be part of a star-studded set-up as MI, where you have the likes of Sachin Tendulkar and Ricky Ponting? It is an amazing feeling to be around them. Guys like Sachin Tendulkar and Ricky Ponting, whom I have watched while growing up over the last 16-17 years on TV. It is just amazing that I got the chance to actually play with them and be part of a winning team with them. I just want to make the most of this time, and hopefully this will last a long time, as I am loving being here with the Mumbai Indians. source: iplt20.com |
Watson's knock 'a dream come true' #RRvsCSK Posted: 12 May 2013 10:44 PM PDT Although they were pushed on the back-foot early in the innings, Shane Watson, accompanied by Stuart Binny pulled off a comprehensive win over the Chennai Super Kings in their last match at the Sawai Mansingh Stadium to maintain their unbeaten streak at home. Having lost four wickets for 45 runs the Rahul Dravid-led side faced an uphill task and were laboring their way to the 142-run target until the duo broke the shackles in the 11th over, claiming 23 runs off Ravichandran Ashwin and never looked back. Binny who has been finishing matches for the Royals' once again fulfilled the role with a 23-ball 41 while Watson's swashbuckling 70 off 34 balls took the game away from the visitors. The all-rounders entertained the crowd with a shower of sixes with Watson smashing six and Binny hitting three to take the attack to the Chennai Super Kings. Their onslaught to on Ashwin tilted the match in their favour and they steadily seized the advantage from MS Dhoni's team. While speaking to IPLT20.com after his match winning performance, a thrilled Watson credited Binny for his performance and looked back on the match and their glorious run at home in the Pepsi Indian Premier League 2013. Excerpts from the interview: On being unbeaten at home We have had a lot of success here, lot like the first year I played here. We certainly know the conditions well and most importantly we have got a really good team at the moment. We have got lot of depth throughout our whole squad. Everyone is chipping in when we need to, so it is working out nicely. On Stuart Binny's innings and the role he has played throughout the season Stuy has been amazing, both with the bat and the ball even on Sunday he bowled beautifully. The conditions suited him beautifully. He swung the ball nicely and with the bat he just comes out and finds the boundary very much straight away. That certainly takes a lot of pressure off me. Initially when he first came out, I suppose that over from (Ravichandran) Ashwin was going to be really important to be able to try and pull that run rate back a little bit. On what he told Binny since they had already lost four wickets We didn't talk that much to be honest. We knew instinctively that Ashwin was going to be someone we have to really try and score runs off. We had to get a big over through that period of time over that one, two or three overs. It just worked out that Stuy got a six, which meant that we could try and take that over and get that big over that we really needed. On whether they picked the bowlers that they were going to attack It was mainly him at that point of time. We were struggling to try and find the boundary. It just worked out nicely that Ashwin came on and bowled a couple of balls that we were still looking for. In the end it was, I suppose to bat on instinct like myself and Stuy were doing with the hope he bowls in the areas that were luckily in our favour. What it was like to bat in the middle? It took me a little while to get going. There was a little bit in the wicket early so initially I was a little bit hesitant to try and take any risk but in the end I knew I needed to as the run rate was getting up high. I knew we had to start to take a few risks and when I did, it started to come off nicely, so it was just one of those days you dream off that everything you try, every shot that you are hoping for comes your way and it did on Sunday night. On whether he was aware that they needed to finish by the 16th over to claim pole position in the points table when he had started hitting the bowlers towards the end No, I didn't know that. But we were trying to finish the game as quickly as we could. As soon as we got down below run-a-ball we knew we were comfortably placed with wickets in hand. We knew that we had to try and score quickly so that is we started swinging too hard in the end to try and get our run-rate up. On sending James Faulkner at No 3 despite having a flexible line-up The thought was that there was going to be a bit of pace and bounce in the wicket and also maybe a little bit of seam with the new ball. Jimmy Faulkner certainly knows how to bat in those sort of conditions, batting where he does back in Australia. So we thought, that would have been a good option. It didn't work out but that's okay, we knew the reason why we were doing it and what it could have provide for the team. But on other days it has worked, like having Sanju V up at No 3 and it paid off. So we just wanted to give it a try and hope that it comes off but unfortunately it didn't. Whether it was the rain factor or the belief in their batsmen that saw them opting to bowl We knew that there could have been a little bit of rain around, there is no doubt about that and also that we have chased very well here. We have controlled the batting innings very well in the last few games as well. I think we certainly are batting well at the moment but we have also batted well when we have batted first. On plans for CSK's batting line-up, comprising the likes of MS Dhoni, Michael Hussey and Co You always have a few plans and you hope that they come off. You bowl well enough, good balls to try and get them out so it was just one of the days that our plans worked which is nice. On the plan going forward with two away games remaining and trying to finish in the top two Well the most important thing is to keep playing good cricket. We played Mumbai Indians here at home and beat them very convincingly in the last game. So we know exactly what we have to do to beat Mumbai Indians. We have had a bit of success in Mumbai the last few years as well in the Wankhede Stadium. It is a beautiful wicket so I am looking forward to playing there. On areas that they would be looking to improve on You always try to get better every single game. Batting-wise we have been controlling the innings really well. Partnerships have been amazing with Rahul (Dravid) and Ajinkya Rahane and we know that everyone is going to chip in at some stage and on one day it is going to be our day. I think bowling wise we are certainly bowling better towards the end of our bowling innings as well. We have got to continue to improve in a few little areas but we certainly got good momentum at the moment. source: iplt20.com |
Credit to Watson for the way he played: Murali Vijay #RRvsCSK Posted: 12 May 2013 10:53 PM PDT A superb innings by Shane Watson broke the strangle-hold that Chennai Super Kings had on the Rajasthan Royals on Sunday evening. Put in to bat the MS Dhoni-led side were given a good start by Michael Hussey and Murali Vijay with a 83-run openings stand but the visitors couldn't capitalise on it until a late onslaught by Dwayne Bravo helped them put a respectable total on the board. While defending 141 runs the visitors had the home team precariously placed at four for 45 but, Shane Watson and Staurt Binny took the game away with some exciting batting. However, the loss did not affect the standings of the team in the points table. While speaking to IPLT20.com, Vijay who notched up his second fifty of the Pepsi Indian Premier League 2013, lauded Watson's match winning performance. Reflecting on the loss he added that the opening stand is one of the positives that they would be taking from the game as they head into the business end of the tournament. Excerpts from the interview: On CSK continuing to be at the top of the points table despite the loss with one more home game to go Yes, that is what really matters at the moment. We are comfortably placed in the points table but we don't want to take anything for granted, so the next game is going to be much more important for us. We are just looking forward to it. On getting his second half-century of the season and being back amongst runs This game is like that. On some days it is yours and on some days it is not yours. So obviously you have to be consistent and I am just working on that. The main thing is that I am batting well and that is more important for me than getting runs. I know that if I keep hitting the ball well runs will come automatically. What it felt like batting at the SMS stadium There was a zip in the wicket, it was not that easy for shot making and actually you have to give credit to (Shane) Watson for the way he played. On fancying their chances when RR were four for 45 He (Watson) is a world class player and on his day nobody can stop him. He played well on Sunday. Hopefully the next time we turn up we will put up a better show. On whether Bravo's cameo helped make a match of the game Absolutely, because it was difficult for a batsman to just go in and get three boundaries like that. It was unbelievable. He is a key player in our team. He has done his part. On the positives that they will take from the game Obviously our batting! We batted really well at the start. That was a concern early on. Now it is like everybody is getting runs, so that is a good sign for CSK. On CSK's superb fielding We take pride on that aspect of the game. Everybody puts in their hard yards at the training session so it is coming good. Hopefully we can put up a better show in the next game. source: iplt20.com |
RR vs CSK - M61 Report & Stats: IPL 2013 Posted: 12 May 2013 10:23 PM PDT Match Report: Rajasthan Royals kept their 'fortress' intact with a comfortable five-wicket win over Chennai Super Kings at the Sawai Mansingh Stadium in Jaipur. After restricting CSK to a modest 142, Rajasthan Royals cruised past the finish line, courtesy Shane Watson's blazing 70. Chasing a moderate 142, RR started slowly before Jason Holder struck in the fourth over getting two wickets. First he had Ajinkya Rahane (9) caught by Murali Vijay at mid-on, before knocking out James Faulkner's (1) off-stump. Sanju Vishvanadh (0) promoted up the order then departed caught behind off Mohit Sharma to leave RR reeling at 19 for three. Chris Morris got CSK their fourth wicket having Rahul Dravid (28) caught behind. At the halfway stage, RR were 49 for four, still needing 93 runs. Binny set the ball rolling for RR, hitting Ravichandran Ashwin for a six in his very first over. Watson joined in smashing two sixes as Ashwin's first over was taken apart for 23 runs. Binny followed that up with two boundaries off Morris before Watson followed it with a six off Holder in the 13th over. Dwayne Bravo was taken apart for 22 runs in the 14th as Watson and Binny put him over the fence thrice. Watson continued the assault with four more boundaries off Morris's 15th to bring up his half-century. Watson and Binny (41*) added 93 runs in just 45 balls. Watson (70) fell, bowled by Bravo with RR on the doorstep of victory, needing just four more runs. RR reached the target with 17 balls remaining. Earlier RR won the toss and opted to field first on a pitch that had a scattering of grass on it. CSK started cautiously scoring just seven runs off the first two overs before Vijay and Michael Hussey hit a boundary each off Vikramjeet Malik in the third over. Vijay then smashed consecutive boundaries off Watson in the sixth over. Rahane put down a difficult chance of Vijay when on 26. At the halfway stage, CSK were 75 for no loss. Binny gave RR their first breakthrough uprooting Hussey's (40) leg-stump and sending it cart-wheeling. Kevon Cooper then struck twice in the 13th over, first having Suresh Raina (1) caught by Vishwanadh in the deep before having MS Dhoni (2) edging to Watson at slip. The bowlers brought RR back into the game strangling the flow of runs. Vijay (55), trying to run off a bye, was run out by Dishant Yagnik. Bravo (23*) slammed three consecutive boundaries off Cooper in the penultimate over. CSK eventually scampered to 141 for four from their 20 overs. Man-of-the-Match: Shane Watson Brief Scores: Chennai Super Kings 141 for 4 (Murali Vijay 55, Kevon Cooper 2-32) lost to Rajasthan Royals 144 for 5 in 17.1 overs (Shane Watson 70, Jason Holder 2-20) by 5 wickets. Stats Highlights: 100: Percent - Rajasthan Royals' record of winning at home (eight out of eight) and also winning while chasing (seven out of seven). 93: Runs added by Shane Watson and Stuart Binny – highest fifth wicket partnership against Chennai Super Kings in IPL. Gautam Gambhir and Mithun Manhas had added 75 runs in an unbroken partnership for Delhi Daredevils at Chennai in 2010. 85.71: Percent of Watson's runs came in boundaries only (six fours and six sixes – 60 runs in boundaries out of 70). Only Sanath Jayasuriya managed a higher boundary percentage (89.47) against Chennai Super Kings in an innings of 50 or more (Deccan Chargers' Sunny Sohal also had a boundary percentage of 85.71 against Chennai Super Kings at Chennai in 2011). 25: Balls taken by Shane Watson to reach his fifty - fastest for Rajasthan Royals in IPL2013. Incidentally Watson himself held the previous record with a 29-ball fifty also against Chennai Super Kings at Chennai. 24: Rajasthan Royals' score in the first six overs – their lowest in IPL2013. They had made 30 for 1 against Sunrisers Hyderabad at Jaipur. 23: Runs conceded by R Ashwin in his first over – most expensive over by a CSK bowler in IPL2013. 2: Number of times Shane Watson has hit 6 sixes in a match against Chennai Super Kings. He had also hit the same number of sixes in the earlier game against them at Chennai. Watson now joins Chris Gayle in hitting six sixes on two occasions against Chennai Super Kings. 1: Chennai Super Kings lost their first game while defending a target in IPL2013. They won five such previous games. 0: Not a single six was hit in Chennai Super Kings' innings – first such instance for them in IPL2013. Presentation Dhoni: "We bowled well in the first 10-11 overs. Watson batted really well. We were not able to capitalise on the good starting our batting. In the positives, our middle and lower middle order got a chance to bat. I was worried about the spinners, once they went after Ashwin I thought let's bowl the fast bowlers. There were a couple of overs of fast bowling where they didn't bowl well. It was a lovely track, we should have scored more runs. We didn't get enough." Dravid: "It was a wicket where we had to back-end our batting. They had a couple of spinners we knew we wanted to target. I would have liked a few more runs in the first 10 overs. It was an amazing spell of four or five overs, it's only someone like Watto who can do that. It's a fantastic cricket wicket, there's something in it for the bowlers and good for the batsmen as well. 20 points, we've got a couple of games on the road now. It's been great to play and win eight here in Jaipur. The support, every game here has been played in front of a packed house. It's one of the memories I'll cherish." Watson is Man of the Match, he's still got his pads on: "It was a bit of a slow start, I started to take a few risks and it came off for me. Mishits were falling into gaps. We knew 140 was going to be a decent chase, we just needed one big partnership, Binny got it going in the Ashwin over. We were waiting for one opportunity to get one big over. It seemed like spin was a bit easier to play than faster bowling." source: iplt20.com |
KKR vs RCB - M60 Report & Stats: IPL 2013 Posted: 12 May 2013 10:03 PM PDT Match Report: The first IPL match at Ranchi turned out to be a low scoring affair on a slow pitch as the 'home team', Kolkata Knight Riders defeated Royal Challengers Bangalore by five wickets. KKR, after restricting RCB to just 115, chased down the total with four balls remaining. Chasing a meager 116, KKR lost Manvinder Bisla (0) caught by Moises Henriques off Ravi Rampaul on the second ball of the run chase. Jacques Kallis was given a chance on three as Abhimanyu Mithun misjudged the catch by the boundary. Gautam Gambhir got stuck into Mithun smashing three successive boundaries off him in the fourth over. R Vinay Kumar struck in the sixth over when he had Gambhir (14) edge to Chris Gayle at slip. Yusuf Pathan slammed a six off Murali Kartik in the eighth over. At the halfway stage, KKR were 61 for two, still requiring 55 more runs. Kartik got the dangerous Pathan (18) out LBW. Kallis (41) smashed consecutive boundaries off Mithun before the bowler came back to have him caught by Henriques. Needing 14 off the last three overs, Vinay Kumar had Manoj Tiwary (24) caught by Virat Kohli at cover to cause a brief moment of worry in the KKR dressing room. Ryan ten Doeschate hit a boundary in the 19th leaving his team to score five off the final over. Doeschate (11*) hit Vinay Kumar straight down the ground to finish the match in style as KKR crossed the line. Earlier, KKR won the toss and opted to field. After a slow start, KKR struck through Sachithra Senanayake when he had Cheteshwar Pujara (5) caught by Lakshmipathy Balaji at cover. RCB managed only 22 from the Power Play – the lowest score posted in the Power Play overs in this season of IPL. RCB got a move on as Gayle launched Ryan ten Doeschate for a six. Jacques Kallis got KKR their second wicket as Kohli (17) dragged one onto the stumps. At the halfway stage, RCB were 54 for two. Gayle (33), who was looking out of sorts, was put out of misery when he was beaten by Narine and Manvinder Bisla pulled off a sharp stumping. The KKR bowlers bowled tight lines to strangle the flow of runs. AB de Villiers (28) slammed Balaji for a six, before the bowler came back to have him caught behind, attempting a reverse sweep. Narine then trapped local lad Saurabh Tiwary (1) leg before wicket to leave RCB five down. Henriques (11) perished in the 18th over caught in the deep off Kallis. Rampaul (0) and Mithun (2) departed off Narine to give him his fourth wicket and with it the Purple Cap. RCB eventually crawled to 115 for nine. Man-of-the-Match: Jacques Kallis Brief Scores: Royal Challengers Bangalore 115 for 9 (Chris Gayle 33, Sunil Narine 4-22) lost to Kolkata Knight Riders 116 for 5 in 19.2 overs (Jacques Kallis 41, R Vinay Kumar 2-17) by 5 wickets. Stats Highlights: 115: Royal Challengers Bangalore's total – their lowest in IPL2013. They had made 130 for 8 against Sunrisers Hyderabad at Hyderabad. 20: JSCA International Stadium Complex, Ranchi became the 20th Indian ground to host an IPL match. 4: Number of times Sunil Narine has taken four wickets in an IPL match. He becomes the first bowler to do so. Five other players – Anil Kumble, Munaf Patel, Lakshmipathy Balaji, Amit Mishra and Lasith Malinga – have taken three four-wicket hauls. 3: Number of times Chris Gayle has scored 600 runs in an IPL edition – for third consecutive year! He had made 608 in 2011 and 733 in 2012. No one else has done this more than once. 2: Number of bowlers to take 20 wickets in an IPL edition on two occasions. Sunil Narine emulated Lasith Malinga, who had taken 28 wickets in 2011 and 22 in 2012. Narine took 24 in 2012 and has 22 in 2013. Presentation Gambhir: "We don't want to think too much about whether we're going to reach the playoffs or not, we still need to play good cricket, we're the defending champions and just need to keep playing in the same way. It was a very professional effort from the bowlers, a lot of credit needs to go the bowling department and to Jacques [Kallis] for the way he handled the chase. It was a difficult wicket but we put in a very professional effort. I'm a strong believer that the captain is only as good as his team. When everything clicks, you look like a great captain, but when it's not working you like a very funny kind of a captain." Kohli: "It's a wrong time to have that loss, we weren't good enough on the day. It was a hard enough wicket that you could score runs, the guys got starts but there were a few unfortunate dismissals, a few errors of judgement but all credit to Kolkata, they'll bowled pretty well. AB [de Villiers] and Moises [Henriques] were important wickets at the end, they probably could have added the 20 or 30 more runs that would have made the difference. It got pretty close but all credit to KKR, they bowled well on the slowish track. We're not thinking about the playoffs, we just want to win our next two games." source: iplt20.com |
