Chasing 171, KKR lost Manvinder Bisla (1) early as Wayne Parnell trapped him leg before wicket with one that jagged back in. Parnell got a second wicket in his next over, making a mess of Jacques Kallis' (1) stumps. The top order collapse continued as Gautam Gambhir (12) was caught by Yuvraj Singh miscuing Ishwar Pandey to leave KKR reeling at 21 for 3. KKR made 33 from their Power Play with their top three back in the dressing room.

Yusuf Pathan smashed two boundaries off Ishwar Pandey as KKR started to get a move on in the seventh over. Pathan and Ryan ten Doeschate controlled the required rate scoring 21 runs of the next two overs.  Ryan ten Doeschate then launched Ali Murtaza for a maximum as KKR reached 74 for three at the half-way stage.

Pathan sent Luke Wright back into the stands as KKR looked to up the ante. ten Doeschate and Pathan added 98 for the fourth wicket partnership. Needing 49 from 30 balls, ten Doeschate (42) was run out by Murtaza in the 16th over to bring PWI back into the game.

Bhuvneshwar Kumar struck another blow when Manoj Tiwary (0) was caught by Manish Pandey in the deep.
Pathan went after Parnell hitting him for two boundaries and a six before he was dismissed in the most dramatic fashion - Obstructing the Field - as he tapped the ball away while attempting to sneak a single. The hard-hitting batsman made 72 – his first half-century in KKR colours. Needing 18 from the final over, KKR fell seven runs short.

Earlier, KKR won the toss and elected to field. PWI got off to a positive start as Robin Uthappa slammed two sixes off Lakshmipathy Balaji in the third over. Uthappa (25) dragged Sachithra Senanayake onto his stumps to give KKR their first breakthrough. PWI made 42 from their Power Play. After a few quiet overs, Aaron Finch smashed Kallis for consecutive sixes in the tenth over to get the momentum back in favour of his team.

The twelfth over too saw two sixes; Finch hit Rajat Bhatia for a maximum before Pandey followed suit depositing Bhatia over the ropes. Balaji struck in the 13th over sending Finch's off-stump cart-wheeling to give KKR their second wicket. Pandey hit three successive boundaries off Kallis in the 15th over. Yuvraj Singh then slog-swept Sunil Narine for a six in the 17th over as PWI stepped on the accelerator. The 18th over bowled by Balaji was taken apart for 18 runs as Pandey smashed two boundaries, before Yuvraj deposited one into the crowd. Pandey (66) fell in the final over, run out after smashing two consecutive boundaries. Yuvraj Singh (30) launched Kallis for a six before perishing of the final delivery of the innings. PWI finished their 20 overs at 170 for four.

Presentation quotes:

Gambhir: Tough pill to swallow. The way Pathan was going we should have won the game. Pretty freak dismissal, not seen it in my career, but I don't know. We haven't played good cricket, not been consistent enough.

Finch: We have played some good cricket throughout the tournament but haven't been able to get over the line. We are happy to knock KKR off given that we had nothing else to play for tonight.

Manish Pandey is the man of the match: It feels great after losing nine games. We could not do as we expected as a team but happy today.

India's Tour to Zimbabwe 'hold'

Posted: 15 May 2013 05:54 AM PDT

Indian cricket team's upcoming tour of Zimbabwe, earlier scheduled to be held in July, has been put "on hold" due to "fatigue factor".

The tour was supposed to follow the Champions Trophy in England and a tri-series in the West Indies from June 28 to July 11.

The tour has been put on hold due to a 'fatigue factor', a BCCI official was quoted as saying by a leading cricket website.

The ICC's Future Tours Programme had scheduled three ODIs to be hosted in Zimbabwe and there was also talk of that being extended to five.

The BCCI has assured that it will respect its commitment to Zimbabwe Cricket (ZC) and intends to visit there at some stage, though it has not set any time frame yet.

However, both ZC and broadcasters SuperSport are unaware of the proposed postponement, according to the report.

The postponement is expected to have wide-ranging consequences for Zimbabwean cricket, most notably financially.

Bhuvneshwar Kumar is a diamond India need to treasure: Donald

Posted: 14 May 2013 10:47 PM PDT

Alan-Donald-MI-vs-PWI-IPL-2013

It has been one disappointing ride for the Pune Warriors India in this edition of the IPL. With just two games left to play, PWI coach Alan Donald spoke about how the team has been a well knit unit throughout the ups and downs in the tournament and looked forward to putting up two spirited performances in the remaining games.

"Even before the start of the tournament we discussed that this was a massive opportunity for the squad to prove their worth to a franchise that has been struggling over the last couple of years," Donald said.

"One thing I cannot fault is that the team has stayed very tight throughout the competition though we have not produced the results. Hopefully in the next two games, players can produce results for Pune Warriors India and then for themselves. We need two great performances right now and hopefully they will step up at this beautiful stadium of Ranchi."

Donald also said that as a coach he has tried his level best to motivate a group of players who have suffered more loses than wins in the tournament.

"As a leader of the group, I have tried extremely hard to motivate a group of players, but the toughest thing to get up from a dug out has been when you lose, which is hard to take. I have never been in such a position throughout my career and I can only try as hard as I can to motivate the team. I am still trying to find answers as to where we went wrong and I have never experienced a ride like this in the two IPL seasons we have had. It has been four games now and it has been a case of playing for pride. We are down to two, and it is up to us now to step up on Wednesday against KKR. We deserve to prove to the owners that this team can play."

Rightly so, if you look at the team at disposal and see the quality of players in that line up, one cannot help but imagine how the team has had such a dismal run this season. Donald believed the marquee players have not performed to their prime which was so vital to a team's progress. A special word of mention for Yuvraj Singh too was reserved by the coach.

"Yuvraj Singh has been fantastic," Donald said. "He has kept up his attitude throughout this competition and he is a great example for everybody in the change room. There might be an argument that had Yuvraj scored, we would have won more games. But the bottom line is he has not scored and you cannot deal with it. A lot of our marquee players have not stepped up to the mark. You win the IPL when your big players step up and win you games. Yuvi has been an absolute legend in this IPL for us so far and one can only learn from that."

And when Donald was asked about his assessment of young Bhuvneshwar Kumar ahead of the all important ICC Champions Trophy, Donald had nothing but heaps of praise for the medium pacer.

"I was very impressed with Bhuvneshwar Kumar's skill levels since last year. He is in line for a long career in all formats of the game. He has had a long season and he is feeling a bit tired, but he is also getting ready for the ICC Champions Trophy. I think the biggest asset for Bhuvneshwar is that he wants to book his place in that Indian team and wants to become a legend of Indian cricket. That attitude takes you a long way. I know he will exploit the conditions for India if there is anything for him on the wickets in England. He is going to be a handful in that ICC Champions Trophy. India has got an absolute 'little diamond' that they have got to work with," exclaimed Donald.

How "Mr. Cricket" Michael Hussey conquered T20

Posted: 14 May 2013 10:39 PM PDT

Michael-Hussey-lap-of-honour-CSK-vs-DD-IPL-2013

An embarrassed smile adorns his face when you tell him that he's 'the rock of Chennai Super Kings batting' and that he is 'one of the most dangerous batsmen in the IPL'. He refutes any claim to making batting look beautiful and "what the team needs" is his common refrain. (Also Read: CSK vs DD - M64 Report & Stats: IPL 2013)

That's Michael Hussey, the second most prolific run-getter of Pepsi IPL 2013 and the foremost contender of the Orange Cap, currently held by Chris Gayle.

After CSK won their last home game of the season, against Delhi Daredevils, Hussey, as graciously as ever spoke to IPLT20.com about the approach that has made him a leading T20 batsman from a once Test specialist.

While the modest Mr. Cricket downplayed his own brilliance, he was magnanimous in his praise of 'a freak of a batsman', AB de Villiers and his CSK team-mate, Suresh Raina for whom 'sky is the limit'.

Excerpts:

From being tagged as a Test specialist to now emerging as one of the most dangerous T20 batsmen – how has the journey been?

I'm not sure about being a dangerous batsman. I've got an important role of trying to get the team off to a good start and it's just nice to contribute. It doesn't happen all the time. In T20 cricket you need a bit of luck along the way and it's nice that luck has gone my way in this tournament.

Did you always have an attacking game or did you develop it along the way?

I think it slowly developed over time. I was very much a defensive player when I first started playing. Probably learning to play in different formats of the game and different situations teaches you to try and be a bit more adventurous.

Are there adjustments you make in your technique or stance when batting in T20s?

No, not really. I don't change too much in regards with my preparation and technique. I probably try and clear the front leg a little bit in T20. In Tests you try and stay behind the line and play the ball in front of your eyes whereas in T20s you're looking to free your arms and hit the ball a bit more. That's probably the only small technical change that I make.

Do you use a heavier bat in the shortest format?

No, I don't change my bat; I know most boys use heavier bats in T20s but I just try and keep the same bat.

Running between the wickets is a crucial part of your game even in T20s. Do you make a conscious effort to balance your attacking shots and rotating the strike?

You're right! Running between wickets is a very important part of batting in T20s. Whether you're going for the big shots or not, you have to keep running well between the wickets. For me, I try to have a couple of areas in my mind where I think I can hit the ball for four. If the ball is meant to be hit in that area, I don't hold back. If not, I just try and get some bat on it and run hard between the wickets.

Originally you were an opener but you had to adapt as a middle order batsman. Did that role help you develop your attacking game?

I think so. I was an opener for most of my career but then having to move into the middle order was my only opportunity to play for Australia. So, I had to learn pretty quickly and I really enjoyed the challenge. There are so many different situations you came across batting in the middle order. At times you come in with your team in a lot of trouble having lost early wickets. Sometimes, you come in at 300 for three and you've just got to tee off. You bat with the tail sometimes – there are so many great situations.

Ricky Ponting a few days back said, as a batsman his first priority is to get six runs off the ball. If he cannot, he goes for a four and then takes in down. What is your approach to batting?

It's definitely not what Ricky's is. I don't think I can hit too many sixes (laughs). I just go with a clear mind and let my instincts take over. Sometimes, if the pitch is good and the situation requires it, you can get off to a bit of flier by playing good shots.

Despite growing up batting on Aussie wickets, how did you develop as one of the best players of spin bowling of your time?

I've always enjoyed playing on Indian pitches. I enjoy the slower wickets where you've got to time the ball, place it in gaps and try to manipulate the field. It's a great challenge and one that I really love to handle.

How important is the sweep shot to be a good player against spin? How does it's importance increase or decrease depending on the format?

I think it's an important option to have. In T20 cricket generally the bowlers are trying to bowl quite fast and so the sweep can be a very dangerous shot to play. In Test matches if there's rough outside the off-stump it can come into play more. But it's a good option to have even in the shortest format. That's the thing with T20 – you can't be scoring in just one area because it makes it too easy for the bowler to tie you up.

AB de Villiers does not consider the sweep as a dangerous shot in T20s, does he?

I think he's a freak of a player! He's one of my favourite batsmen in the world. He can hit fours and sixes all around the ground and that makes him very difficult for the bowlers to bowl to. He has immense belief in his own ability and he's a fantastic player.

So, is he the best T20 batsman according to you?

I think he's one of the best. There are the obvious ones like Chris Gayle and Shane Watson but they are powerful guys. But what makes AB special is that he can score runs all around. I think Suresh Raina is another fantastic T20 player. He has got a very good mix of working the ball and bringing in the power game as well.

Being a left-hander, have you been helping Suresh Raina overcome the limitations that have kept him from being a regular in the Test team?

I don't necessarily agree that he does have any limitations. The Indian Test team is a pretty tough one to get into. There are some quality batsmen in there. The only thing that I've been telling Suresh is to keep his mind clear and let his instincts take over. He's such a talented player but great players tend to keep their mind blank and play with freedom. If he does that in Test cricket, the sky is the limit for him.

What do you read into his perceived vulnerability against the short ball?

I don't agree with that as well. I have watched him play the short ball very well in T20 cricket. I have seen a lot of teams targeting him with the short ball and he generally dispatches them into the crowd. So, I don't think there's an issue there, to be honest. It's just all mental.

DD were left reeling with half their side gone as Ben Rohrer (4) flicked Morkel to Ashwin at square-leg. At the halfway stage, DD were 65 for five, requiring 104 runs.

David Warner played a lone hand, hitting Morkel for a maximum in the 12th over. Roelof van der Merwe (14) perished trying to up the run rate as he was caught by Suresh Raina at long-on. Needing 59 from 24 balls, Warner (44) was seventh out, caught by Murali Vijay at the boundary off Morkel. Dwayne Bravo then struck twice – to get the Purple Cap; he first got past the defenses of Irfan Pathan (4) before having Ashish Nehra (0) caught behind. DD eventually fell short by 33 runs.

Earlier CSK won the toss and elected to bat first. Vijay was given a lucky break as Kedar Jadhav put him down on two off the bowling of Nehra. Michael Hussey then smashed consecutive boundaries off Irfan Pathan in the fourth over. Hussey and Vijay went after Botha hitting him for two boundaries and a six as CSK made 47 from their Power Play. Vijay (31) was the first batsman to be dismissed after Ben Rohrer threw down the stumps directly. Hussey (26) top edged a pull off Umesh Yadav and was caught by Sehwag. Raina (7) followed him caught by Warner off van der Merwe.

Dhoni walked in to bat in the 11th over and launched Pathan over the ropes in the 12th over. He was given a reprieve on 14 when Siddarth Kaul dropped a return catch. Dhoni then smashed Nehra for a massive six before following it up with a boundary. Yadav bowled Ravindra Jadeja (24) to leave CSK four down in the 17th over. Dhoni however continued attacking, hitting two sixes and two boundaries in the 18th and 19th over. CSK finished with 168 for four.

Quotes from presentation

"Disappointing losing today," says David Warner. "Thought the bowlers bowled well in the top six, but didn't get wickets in the middle, which let them get away. It's tough, but you have to play with a clear mind. You still have to win the matches for the folks back in Delhi. Hope the Dharamsala wicket is nice and juicy."

"I try to keep myself blank when preparing," says MS Dhoni, also the Man of the Match. "I try to visualise. The bus ride. I like the stadium at least 15-20 minutes from the hotel so I can visualise during the ride. Each and every side has strengths and weakness. We have balanced that well. In each of six years we have made the playoffs. That is a big achievement both for the team and the owners."

Azhar Mahmood, promoted up the order, dismissed Moises Henriques for three successive boundaries as KXIP made 46 from their Power Play. Gilchrist smashed consecutive boundaries off Jaydev Unadkat in the 9th over. At the halfway stage KXIP were 79 for one, still requiring 96 runs.

Rajagopal Sathish (12*) pulled Vinay Kumar for a maximum as KXIP reached the target with 11 balls remaining.

Earlier KXIP won the toss and put RCB in. RCB started slowly before losing Cheteshwar Pujara (19) in the fifth over caught by David Miller off Parvinder Awana. RCB made only 31 from their Power Play overs. Chris Gayle, struggling to find his touch was lucky to survive a LBW appeal off Awana in the seventh over. RCB started to accelerate in the twelfth over as Virat Kohli stepped out and launched Piyush Chawla for a six.

Gony was taken apart for 22 runs in the 15th over as Gayle slammed three successive sixes. Kohli then hit a six and a boundary off Awana in the next over. The duo added 137 runs for the second wicket. Kohli was caught off Mahmood off a no-ball in the 17th over. Sandeep Sharma's fourth over – 18th of the innings - was plundered for 20 overs, as Gayle hit yet another six. Gayle (77) smashed Awana for a six, before the bowler shattered the off-stump. de Villiers (6) then was bowled after he too smashed a six. Kohli (58) fell in the final over as RCB posted 174 for five.

85: Adam Gilchrist's score – highest by a 40+ player in IPL. Rahul Dravid had made 65 against Delhi Daredevils at Delhi on April 6.

1: Royal Challengers Bangalore suffered their first defeat at home in IPL2013.

Presentation:

Virat Kohli: "We thought it was a good total, the first 5-6 overs kept low and slow, getting close to 180 was a good effort. We were waiting for a few big overs, 160-165 was par. The wicket settled down beautifully in the second innings, we did not expect it to. 175 wasn't enough in the end. We haven't hit the right areas as a bowling unit and that's something we need to improve. We're in a position were we desperately need one win, it's not a good position to be in, but we just have to do what we have to do."

Adam Gilchrist is the Man of the Match. "I'm not sure I'd call it form," he says of his innings. "I think Azhar Mahmood deserves this (the award). He came in and played his natural game, I ws trying to play my natural game but was barely clearing the circle. But he helped me loosen up a bit ... After the first four overs I thought I had made an error in judgement in bowling. But once the lights came on, it seemed to come on a little better ..."

Gilchrist has said Gayle was plumb lbw and then he said he was plumb lbw too. Superb stuff. "We head to Dharamsala now and we enjoy playing up there."
