PWI vs DD - M71 Report & Stats: IPL 2013 Posted: 19 May 2013 08:45 PM PDT Match Report: In the battle to decide who takes the wooden spoon, Pune Warriors India triumphed over the Delhi Daredevils by 38 runs at the Subrata Roy Sahara Stadium in Pune. Batting first PWI, riding on their skipper Aaron Finch's half-century, posted 172 before their bowlers restricted DD to 134. Chasing 173, David Warner was given a life as early on as he was dropped by Finch off Bhuvneshwar Kumar's first delivery. Wayne Parnell however got Warner (2) the next over caught by wicket-keeper Robin Uthappa. Bharath Chipli, playing his first match of the season, pulled Parnell for a six and was put down by Angelo Mathews at slip a few deliveries later. Mahela Jayawardene (14) who survived a stumping chance perished the next delivery as he reached out to a wide delivery from Ali Murtaza only to scoop it to Luke Wright at point. Murtaza struck twice in the 8th over having Virender Sehwag (11) caught out in the deep before trapping Chipli (16) leg before to leave DD four down in the eighth over. Ben Rohrer (7) then dragged Ashoke Dinda as DD at the halfway stage were 65 for five, needing 108 runs more to win. CM Gautam hit a six off Kumar in the 12th over and Irfan Pathan survived a run out attempt as Robin Uthappa failed to collect the ball when whipping off the bails. Needing 69 from 30 balls, DD lost Gautam (30) caught by the boundary off Angelo Mathews. Morne Morkel (0) followed him a couple balls later, caught by Parnell. Pathan (24) then perished caught by Manish Pandey off Mathews in the 19th over. DD eventually finished 38 runs short. Earlier PWI won the toss and elected to bat. PWI started positively as Finch slammed a six off Siddarth Kaul in the second over. Umesh Yadav got the initial breakthrough as Uthappa (24) sliced him to Warner at point. Yadav was then taken for 17 runs as Finch launched him for two sixes and smashed a boundary. Shahbaz Nadeem got one through to bowl Pandey (10). Finch continued attacking with a six and a boundary off Pathan. The PWI skipper brought up his half-century in the 12th over but departed soon after as he chipped one off Kaul to Sehwag at mid-wicket. Yuvraj Singh (3) miscued Irfan Pathan and was caught by Sehwag to leave PWI four down in the 14th over. Angelo Mathews top edged Morkel for a six in the 16th over. Wright hit consecutive boundaries off Morkel in the 18th over before he and Mathews (30*) combined to add 24 runs of the 19th over bowled by Umesh Yadav. Wright (44) fell in the last over as PWI finished at 172 for five. Man-of-the-Match: Luke wright Brief Scores: Pune Warriors India 172 for 5 (Aaron Finch 52, Siddarth Kaul 2-27) defeated Delhi Daredevils 134 for 9 (CM Gautam 30, Angelo Mathews 3-14) by 38 runs. Stats Highlights: 606: Runs added by Robin Uthappa and Aaron Finch for the opening wicket in IPL 2013 – most by any opening pair in a single edition of IPL. Rahul Dravid and Ajinkya Rahane had added 579 runs for Rajasthan Royals last year. 456: Runs scored by Aaron Finch in IPL 2013 – most by a Pune Warriors India batsman in a IPL tournament. 126.60: Virender Sehwag's strike-rate in IPL 2013 – his worst in a single edition of IPL. 65: Runs scored by Pune Warriors India in last 5 overs – their second best effort in IPL. Incidentally the most they have scored is 67 – also against Delhi Daredevils at Delhi in 2012. 13: Number of matches lost by Delhi Daredevils in IPL 2013 – most by a side in a single edition of IPL. Deccan Chargers in 2008; and Pune Warriors India (in 2012 and 2013) lost 12 matches. Presentation: Jayawardene: Tough day at the office for us, sums up the season. They played better cricket on this wicket. Rough season for us but need to move on. Finch: Very happy with the way it ended. Disappointed we haven't been able to do it more often. Crowd has been good throughout the season. Luke Wright is the man of the match: Very nice to finish on a high. Different track from what I am used to at home but this one was a better one. source: iplt20.com |
Zaheer Khan determined to reclaim India spot Posted: 19 May 2013 05:07 AM PDT Having accumulated as many as 11 pace bowlers ahead of IPL 2013, Royal Challenger Bangalore had made all plans to leave their bowling coach, Venkatesh Prasad, overworked. Thankfully for Prasad, he had someone of the ilk of Zaheer Khan by his side, as the team's most experienced fast bowler. (Also Read: RCB vs CSK - M70 Report & Stats: IPL 2013) The fact that Zaheer was nursing his injured calf for best part of the tournament, gave him more time to spend with the young pacers off the field. Now, with the tournament having entered its business end, India's best left-arm seamer is back on the field, picking wickets like he normally does. In only his second game of the tournament, Zaheer picked up four wickets in two overs against CSK to keep RCB's Playoffs chances alive. After the match, he spoke to IPLT20.com about his fitness progress and of his determination to getting back into India colours. Zaheer Khan also took time out to talk about his young pace peers at the RCB, including RP Singh and Jaydev Unadakt. You came on the field for RCB at a very crucial stage of the tournament. How was it playing after such long injury layoff? I was itching to get back on the field but I always take my time to come back whenever I am injured. This time too, I could have played a couple of matches earlier but it's always good to be a game late than coming back too early. That was the thinking between the trainer, physio and me. How strong are you feeling now? I'm definitely feeling much better but I know I've still got a long way to go. Post-IPL I have to put in some serious work into my fitness and form to reclaim my place in the Indian team. That's what's on my mind right now – I want to use that period after the IPL to get stronger, fitter and improve in all the areas. Although you haven't played much this season, has the huge army of young pacers in that RCB dressing room kept you busy? Have you been more in the mentoring mindset this season? I've been in that mindset for a long time now and I try to put in extra effort in that regards. Yes, this season I've had a bit more time on my hand for that role. While I tried to regain my own fitness and did the training, I tried to help the young pacers in whatever capacity I could. Wasim Akram spoke highly of Jaydev Unadkat. And he's shown a lot of improvement this IPL season. How do you rate him? It's really good to see young Unadkat do so well. He's a promising young talent and with time he's definitely going to get better. He had a taste of the highest level very early in his career (Unadkat made his Test debut in 2010 as a 19-year-old) and now he's hungry to get back there, which is good. With time and the effort he is putting in, I'm sure good things are ahead of him. There has been a remarkable rise in his performance this IPL as compared to the previous years. Is it because he has been managed different at the RCB stable? He has definitely improved no doubt about that. But experience also matters. When he played for KKR he was too young and was still learning things. Here he's had a good first-class season under his belt and it is evident in his bowling. It's not only about which team uses a player better but also about how the individual is evolving. You've bowled a lot with RP Singh at the international level and now he is with you at RCB. How far do you he is away from an India comeback? He's done well for us this season and picked up wickets at crucial times, which is very important in this format. I think he's looking good. As a fast bowler it's very important to look after your fitness and learning new things and he's been doing that. I think playing more matches is going to help him a lot. How do you think Virat has grown with the captaincy role given to him this season? He's leading from the front. It shows in his batting that he wants to be responsible for the team's success. I think captaincy is helping him mature fairly quickly. I believe this captaincy stint at IPL will help him improve his game as well. source: iplto.com |
Mohit Sharma credits first-class exploits for IPL break Posted: 19 May 2013 05:01 AM PDT Chennai Super Kings have been the most consistent and one of the most balanced IPL teams since the first season. A strong core of Indian players has been their biggest strength and the main reason behind them finishing in the top-four every time. (Also Read: RCB vs CSK - M70 Report & Stats: IPL 2013) However, there was one slot that they tried hard to fill for the first five years but without much success – that of a quality Indian pace bowler. Ahead of IPL 2013, CSK's bowling coach Andy Bichel oversaw a trail of a few uncapped fast bowlers, picked from the length and breadth of the country and picked four from them. Haryana's 24-year-old pacer, Mohit Sharma, was one of them. After CSK's last league match of the season, Mohit has 17 wickets from 13 matches at an economy rate of 6.23. Also, a majority of his wickets have helped his team break the back of the opposition top-order in the Power Plays. In a chat with IPLT20.com Mohit spoke of his journey in the IPL which will be the culmination of a successful cricketing season for him after being the fifth highest wicket-taker in the 2012-13 Ranji Trophy. The feeling of belonging I have been playing Ranji Trophy for the last two years but I've played a lot of age group cricket before that. I played three-four years of Under-19 cricket before getting a chance in the Ranji Trophy. I have been watching the IPL since the first season and was a little nervous initially when I got my first chance. But now I'm very well used to it. It's become a sort of routine now and has got into the muscle memory. No time to relax I've had a really successful first IPL season but there's still a long way to go. The most crucial matches will come up now in the Playoffs and it's important to do even better in this last phase of the tournament. I hope I can continue to do well in the knockout matches as well. The biggest lesson The biggest thing I've learnt from the IPL is the importance of sticking to your basics no matter what level you play at. Instead of getting carried away with experimenting, do what you do best. It's always your basics that will take you till the very end. First-class cricket is the scale for judgment I don't think Andy Bichel would have even seen me bowling before the CSK trial. It was all due to my first-class performance. If I am standing here today it's purely because of my first-class performance and all credit should go to Haryana Cricket Association and my state team. Hard yards pay off Accuracy has been my strength but I have also developed it along the way. The more competition you face, the more you need to keep improving your game. I have worked on my consistency and also my out-swinger a lot. In Haryana we work a lot on our game and fitness during the off-season and that is all helping in now in my game. Accuracy is one of them. The Power-player I have been given the role of bowling in the Power Plays. But the only instruction I was given was to stick to whatever I have been doing so far, not think too much and try to remain as blank as I can. The coach and captain told me that whatever I have done on the cricket field so far as brought me into the IPL and the same will take me forward in my career. Adding new tricks to the trade Out-swinger is my stock ball but with Andy BIchel I have been working on the incoming delivery. I have been working on my slower ones as well. I used to bowl them back of length but then Bichel told me how I can add variations to my slower ones as well. I'm also learning from him how to get out of jail as a bowler when the batsman is on the attack. The cherished scalps Two IPL wickets are very special for me. One is that of Viru paaji (Virender Sehwag). The fact that I dismissed him in both our matches against Delhi Daredevils makes it all the more special. Another very cherished wicket of mine is that of Yuvi paaji (Yuvraj Singh). These are the two wickets I won't forget for the rest of my life. source: iplt20.com |
Gilchrist, a legend and a great bloke: Shaun Marsh Posted: 19 May 2013 04:55 AM PDT Kings XI Punjab finished their Pepsi Indian Premier League 2013 season on a high and gave their skipper Adam Gilchrist a fitting send off. (Also Read: KXIP vs MI - M69 Report & Stats: IPL 2013) Although KXIP lost the toss and couple of wickets early on, the 148-run third wicket stand involving Azhar Mahmood (80 off 44) and Shaun Marsh carried the team to a formidable total that proved enough to stop the Mumbai Indians. Marsh who scored 63 off 47 with 11 boundaries spoke to IPLT20.com about the game and playing under the legendary wicketkeeper-batsman, Adam Gilchrist. Excerpts from the interview: A comprehensive win against MI, a perfect send off for Adam Gilchrist? Yes, it definitely was! It couldn't have been scripted better at the end for him to get that wicket. It has been a fantastic three years with him. The Kings XI have really enjoyed having him around, he has been a world class player for so long and he is a fantastic bloke as well. He is a legend of the game! It was great to see him get the last wicket. What has it been like to bat alongside him? It is always a great honour and a thrill when you are walking out with Gilly. And he is someone that not only myself but some of the people look up to around the world and to get an opportunity to play with him. To get to know him a little bit better and become friends with him is something I will never forget. What was the plan after losing two wickets early? We knew that I and Azhar (Mahmood) had to just try and build a partnership, give ourselves a little bit of time between two to six overs. We couldn't really afford to lose another wicket quickly. But Azhar Mahmood played a really exceptional innings. It just shows what a quality player he is. What is it like batting against Lasith Malinga? He is a fantastic bowler, a world class bowler and he is always tough to play against him. Feels good to be amongst runs with a big season ahead? It is always nice to do well and score a few runs and see wins and that's the main thing. It was nice to finish off on a nice positive note personally and for the team as well. Have you at any point felt the need to alter your batting approach for T20, being such a classical player? Not really. I just know that I have to play to my strengths and if I do that and hopefully by the end of the innings if I am still around and putting the team in a good position. I love playing T20 cricket, I love playing in front of big crowds and it was a nice way to finish on Saturday night. Where do you think KXIP lost the plot while some other teams managed to pull through? We probably didn't start well, and we lost a few games in the middle as well that put us on the back-foot a bit. In the end, coming in the last few games, we had to rely on other results and that's how we did it and this position we put ourselves in. We have no one else to blame but ourselves. We take a lot of positives out of it as well, from the way we finished. Against the bigger teams we came close to beating them. It gives us a lot of confidence moving forward, I think. How has it been playing alongside David Hussey? He is one of the great players around. He is probably one of the best T20 players in the world and to get a chance to play with him and to learn stuff off him is fantastic. I am glad to be able to spend a lot of fun time with him. How do you sum up your six seasons with KXIP? I love the Kings XI, I love the franchise. I love the people, I love the owners. It is a great place to play cricket, very friendly people and it has been a lot of fun, the last six years. source: iplt20.com |

He made 733 in 2012 edition. Quotes from presentation "It was tough target," says MS Dhoni. "Their bowlers bowled really well after Virat and Gayle gave them a lot of runs to defend. Good sporting wicket. You have to at your best in the playoffs. We want to win the first game. Our middle order has got a decent run, our bowlers have had decent outing. No reason we can't do well." "As I said in the beginning, just pleased to go and get a game" says Virat Kohli, who is also the Man of the Match. "This puts serious pressure on Sunrisers. Obviously the crowd enjoyed it too. Thanks for your support. We told ourselves, aim for 80 and we will get 20 more. Chris and I gave us four-five balls each before hitting. The way Zak bowled it is great to have him back. I'll personally call Gautam tomorrow morning and ask him to go out and win the game for us." source: iplt20.com |

Presentation: Rohit: "We didn't start off well. I thought it was chaseable. We kept losing wickets. Very difficult to come back. Plan was to see off the first 4-5 overs. I would like to congratulate him. We need to regroup. We got to leave the negatives out." Gilchrist: "Harbhajan took my wicket many many times so I just wanted to mimic the reaction. Really well received by this fab crowd. 8 wins and 8 losses, that sums up our cricket the last three years. It will be interesting to see how careers go over the next few years. Happy to watch now and be entertained. Wonderful memories with Kings XI." Azhar Mahmood is the Man of the Match: "I knew I was at 196 wickets in the last game. No.3 is a good number to bat on. I used the slower balls a lot. This Man of the Match is for my daughters. Quite fortunate to play under Gilchrist." source: iplt20.com |
