Chasing a moderate 146, RR lost skipper Rahul Dravid (4), castled by Bipul Sharma after being deceived by the flight. Rahane and Shane Watson got on with the task of rebuilding, adding 64 runs for the second wicket. RR made 38 from their power play overs. Watson launched Sharma for a six before Rahane followed suit depositing Piyush Chawla into the crowd.

Rahane, in full flow, stepped out and hit Manpreet Gony for a maximum over the long-off fence. Chawla who was hit for a boundary by Watson (31) came back to bowl him with a quicker delivery bowled seam up. At the halfway stage, RR were 73 for two, still requiring 73 runs.

Sanju Vishwanadh and Rahane rotated the strike well and kept the scoreboard ticking. Rahane (59*) brought up his fifty with a brace off Parvinder Awana in the 17th over. He immediately slammed Awana over mid-wicket for a six. Vishwanadh (47*) then got into Gony, smashing him for a six and a boundary to see RR home at the end of the 19th over.

Earlier, RR won the toss and elected to field. Ajit Chandila struck in the very first over as Mandeep Singh (0) was beaten by the flight and chipped one straight back to the bowler. KIXP got a move on after a quiet start with three boundaries off S Sreesanth in the fourth over. Adam Gilchrist, who returned to the team as captain hit consecutive boundaries off James Faulkner in the sixth over. Shaun Marsh then went after Chandila smashing him for a six and a boundary. At the halfway stage, KXIP were 74 for one.

Marsh brought up his fifty with a flick to the boundary off Faulkner in the 13th over. Kevon Cooper brought RR back into the match as he picked up three wickets to derail the KXIP innings. He first deceived Gilchrist (42) to dismiss him caught and bowled. David Hussey (1) followed him bowled by his countryman Shane Watson. Marsh deposited Faulkner into the crowd before smashing him for a boundary in the 16th over. Cooper then struck twice dismissing Marsh (77) and David Miller (8) as RR dragged back the match. KXIP finally finished with 145 for six.

Presentation:

Gilchrist: Pitch was slower than normal, made it difficult to hit boundaries. Wanted to get to 160 or so which would have been competitive. We have to win every game from here, we are familiar with this scenario and we hope to compete hard.

Dravid: Proud of the way the guys played, they have been doing well all throughout. They responded well while bowling and batting. We hadn't been quite well in the death overs and we sat down and chatted about it, executed the plans well. Timed the chase well, could have been a tricky chase, Watson, Rahane and Samson timed it well. Something special about Samson, I hope he continues to go well.

Cooper is the man of the match: Wasn't bowling last few games, I knew I had to do well here. Wicket was slow and it suited my bowling. We bowled well in partnerships.

It was an off day for us: Parthiv Patel #SRHvsCSK

Posted: 08 May 2013 10:32 PM PDT

Parthiv-Patel-SRH-vs-CSK-IPL-2013

All talks of the Hyderabad pitch being low and slow were put to rest by the Men in Yellow. Chennai Super Kings posted a mammoth 223 against the Sunrisers Hyderabad on Wednesday, the highest total at this venue, this year so far. (Also Read: SRH vs CSK - M54 Report & Stats: IPL 2013)

It was raining runs as the SRH bowlers were left with no answers to the dominance of the CSK batsmen. The result, the home team had to suffer a 77-run defeat as they retained their fifth spot in the points table.

Sunrisers' opener Parthiv Patel who was coming off a string of low scores in the tournament, finally got some runs on the board scoring a quick-fire 44, though it was not enough to get his team going. In a chat with IPLT20.com, Parthiv spoke of his role in the team and the reason why the Sunrisers Hyderabad have got a lot of people surprised with their good showing in the IPL.

Here are excerpts from the interview:

A disappointing loss for the team, but you would personally take a lot of positives from the game?

Oh yes, definitely. Personally it was good to get some runs today (against the Chennai Super Kings). I was always getting starts and scoring in twenties and getting out. It was good to get an opportunity to get more runs than my previous knocks. It was important the way I started my innings. I got off to a good start and managed to score runs at a brisk pace. Hopefully I can continue this form.

All players have designated roles in the team, what is yours?

My job in the team is to bat through the fifteen overs, try to rotate strike consistently and allow the batsman at the other end to score freely. But Wednesday was a different story. We had to chase a 200 plus score and I had to go for my shots.

SRH boasts of being a good bowling unit. What do you think went wrong for the team?

I think it was just an off day for us. We have bowled well in the tournament so far and have been consistent with our bowling performances. We have to forget about Wednesday's game and just focus on the next game.

Do you think 224 was gettable on this wicket?

You always go into the game with a positive mindset that the target to be chased is always gettable. We had to go for the chase from ball one, and if we had got a good start, you never know the result could have been different. The wicket was really good to bat on, it was a different wicket that we played on and I feel it was the best wicket to bat.

Is batting still a problem for the Sunrisers?

I think it is not an area of concern. We just have to make sure that one from our top order batsmen sticks around till the fifteenth over. If we are able to do that, we can get to scores of 160 or 170 which is a good score on any kind of wicket.

A word on Suresh Raina's innings.

I think it was a phenomenal innings by Suresh Raina and also by Michael Hussey. We all know how good they are and it was their day and they made the most of it.

No.5 in the points table at the moment, the competition is stiff and you have to pull up your socks?

We still have a few games left and we have to look to win them. We cannot think about the run-rate, because it is something that is not in our hands. And if we go and win the games left, I am sure we can make it to the Play-Offs.

Why has the team's good run this IPL taken everybody by surprise?

I think the reason why all have got surprised is that no one was expecting us to do so well. As a team we were always confident of a good show even before the tournament started. We might not have big names in the side, but we knew we have quality players and if we play to our potential we can beat the best sides in the competition.

Whatever Raina touched turned to gold: R Ashwin #SRHvsCSK

Posted: 08 May 2013 10:26 PM PDT

Ravichandran-Ashwin-SRH-vs-CSK-IPL-2013

Just a couple of hours before the start of play, the city of Hyderabad witnessed a slight drizzle that left the streets wet and the locals running for some cover. The thousands in the crowd who had thronged the Rajiv Gandhi International stadium on Wednesday too had to run for cover, not because of the drizzle, but because a certain Suresh Raina was dispatching the cricket ball to the stands with utter disdain.

When Suresh Raina bats, and bats well, there are few people who fail to admire the display of sheer brilliance in his stroke-play. The left-hander fell one short of yet another century in the tournament but along with Michael Hussey put up a 133-run partnership for the second wicket to take CSK to a mammoth total of 223 in twenty overs.

Chennai Super Kings registered a 77-run win against the Sunrisers Hyderabad at the end of the day and remained at the top of the table. CSK's most economical bowler of the day, R Ashwin in his chat with IPLT20.com talks about Raina's innings and CSK's comprehensive victory. Below is an account of the interview.

How would you describe Suresh Raina's knock today?

It was a good knock. It was one of those days where whatever he touched turned into gold. There is not much you can do with describing a batsman's innings like that, because it happens once in every three or four games were a batsman gets away like that.

You have seen Raina play all these years, what has he done to be such a consistent performer for CSK?

There is no point in looking at what he has done. Every player in the side has a personal preparation to do through the tournament and everybody looks to improve at different aspects of the game. This format of the game is something that Raina has always enjoyed and it has brought him a lot of success. He relishes this format and goes through his shots and probably his carefree attitude is what takes him there.

As a bowler, how would you have approached bowling to a batsman who is going hammer and tongs?

In T20s, if a batsman gets going and has the momentum with him, he can get going. It is very tough to stop a batsman when he is in that kind of mood. As a bowling unit you need to apply yourself and get your fields right and get the batsman under pressure. When I turn up and bowl to Raina in the nets, I just look at how I can get him out.

Did the team work out strategies to bat on the Hyderabad wicket, especially after the poor batting display against the Mumbai Indians in the previous game?

We were not focusing much on the wicket or the scores in the previous games here. Against the Mumbai Indians it was almost as if the team had not turned up for the game, we did not bat very well.

We thought we will just apply ourselves, see the ball closely and put the bad balls away and work the others through the gaps. We are quite a good side in terms of maneuvering the deliveries into the gaps and picking up the twos and threes. We focused on that and we executed our plan really well.

Do you think SRH could have got to the total of 224?

224 was 50 to 60 runs too many. I think 160 was probably a par score here, and even then they got 146 on the board. If it was 160-170 it could have probably been a different ball game and probably this was the best wicket that we played on here..

Purple Cap and Orange Cap holders in the team, just shows CSK's consistency isn't it?

According to us Purple and Orange Caps do not mean anything to us. To take wickets or get runs, you need that opportunity. We do not look at the Purple Cap and Orange Cap aspect of the game. It is very pleasing to see two guys from our side having achieved it, we enjoy each other's success and company but that is not something that we focus on.

Does a Michael Hussey give advice to Suresh Raina or any other team-mate on how to bat or share his views on different aspects of the games?

I think all cricketers are very professional who go about their own duty. They make sure that they do not interrupt anybody else's preparation. They do not go out of the way and tell you what needs to be done. When you go and ask them, they are more than willing to help. By just seeing the way they perform, the way they go about their work, ethics, those are the things that you try and learn.

Presentation

Dhoni gets the 'Nayee Soch' award for some innovative field settings. He had a couple of mid-ons in place.

Kumar Sangakkara: Dale Steyn bowled the right length, the others bowled a bit short and did not get the yorkers out. We know it's a bad performance, cannot think about this one, just move ahead.

MS Dhoni: Just like the last game where nothing worked for us. Raina unlucky not to get a 100, but lucky to get to 99. As I said before, we didn't really play the last game. Last game was a good wakeup call. Hussey has been brilliant, among the few cricketers who hasn't changed too much, does not play too many slogs. The only other batsman to do that is Rahul Dravid for the Royals.
Dhoni also hints there may be some changes in the team for the next game. Especially in the bowling.

Raina, man of the match: God has been kind, we won the game. Thanks to the fitness trainer, he's been doing a lot of work with us. Hussey's been very honest, working very hard with all Indian cricketers, good environment in the dressing room. Hope to keep up the good cricket.
