Loss against MI, a wake-up call: Bichel #SRHvsCSK

Posted: 07 May 2013 11:37 PM PDT

Andy-Bichel-SRH-vs-CSK-IPL-2013

In Chennai Super Kings' previous game against the Mumbai Indians, all was going according to their plan. Their bowlers came good, restricting a star studded Mumbai Indians batting line up to 139 and one would have expected CSK to come out trumps with ease.

However, there was a twist in the tale. What transpired was a batting collapse that caught everyone by surprise as CSK were bowled out for 79, their lowest IPL score and a 60-run defeat that ended their seven-match wining streak.

After a series of victories, bowling Coach Andy Bichel felt, in a way the loss was needed. "When you have seven wins in a row, everything is going well for you and you tend to look at the positives of the game. I think it was probably a loss that we needed. It has really put us back in a position of working hard and finding how we won those matches. There are fantastic players in our team who play with a lot of pride. The loss against Mumbai Indians hurt them pretty bad. It will be a challenge for us to bounce back on Wednesday."

CSK face an upbeat Sunrisers Hyderabad, who have won all their home matches so far, but Bichel said his team would want to take confidence from the fact that they have done well away from home.

"We have done pretty well so far, winning matches away from home. Hopefully we can continue that trend here in Hyderabad." One cannot expect scores of 180 being scored in Hyderabad, especially with the kind of wickets at disposal. The venue has been known to stage low scoring games and Bichel felt keeping wickets in hand will be the key.

"I think the wicket here is low and slow and the highest that a side has put up at this venue is just 130. On such a wicket it is a challenge to play and I feel rotating the strike initially with wickets in hand and then launching towards the end of the innings will be an advantage."

One key member in that CSK line-up has been Michael Hussey. Over five hundred runs with an average of 56 and a century to his name, Hussey has been 'Mr. Consistent' for CSK. Bichel hoped Hussey continued the good work.

"Hussey has been brilliant for us especially after retiring from Test cricket. He has a strong focus on T20 cricket now going forward for him. We at CSK have been very lucky to get the response straight away. He has been with CSK for long and hopefully continues what he has done for us this year and in the years to come."

Batting issues have been addressed: Moody #SRHvsCSK

Posted: 07 May 2013 11:28 PM PDT

Tom-Moody-SRH-vs-CSK-IPL-2013

Sunrisers Hyderabad are on a high this season. They have seven wins out of eleven games, five of them coming at home. Come Wednesday, they will look to extend their winning run against the Chennai Super Kings.

CSK are table toppers at the moment and Sunrisers will want to get those two vital points going into Wednesday's game. With a win against the Delhi Daredevils in the previous game, SRH coach Tom Moody said, the mood in the camp was oozing with confidence and the team was looking forward to a key contest.

"Our preparation for Wednesday is no different than the preparation for any other match. We are making sure that every player is well prepared physically and mentally and are all looking forward to the contest."

One of the major highlights for the Sunrisers this year has been their bowling. The likes of Ishant Sharma, Dale Steyn and Amit Mishra have helped the team defend totals as low as 120 and Moody credited their bowling coach Waqar Younis for it.

"Waqar has been a great asset to the side. To have someone of his stature and experience has been of great help for the playing squad and the support staff. He has passed on a lot of wisdom to the players and planned well, given the various surfaces that we have played on. As a player, you have to adjust the way you play and the way you bowl according to the wickets. His formula has been a successful one," Moody said.

But batting has been an area of concern for the home team, wherein posting big totals on the board has been an issue. The cause of concern has been recognised and attended to, according to the SRH coach.

"We were very aware in our mid tournament review that there are certain areas we needed to sharpen up and the batting is certainly one of them. Our batsmen have had to deal with pretty tough surfaces and if you look at the average of totals in the games that we have played, they have all been relatively low. The pleasing thing for me is that different players have done well on different occasions.

"We did not have Shikhar Dhawan for the first half of the tournament, but now he has come in and played a couple of vital knocks for us. Hanuma Vihari too has done well when it came to building up partnerships with Kumar Sangakkara and so has Darren Sammy. We have batted well in the last couple of games and we are not worried about it."

Moody also backed their captain Kumar Sangakkara to come good in the tournament. Sangakkara has scored just 117 in his eight innings so far, with a dismal average of just over fourteen.

"We feel Sangakkara is batting pretty well and has been instrumental in stringing important partnerships in the tournament so far. There is no pressure on Sangakkara to perform. We know he is a class act and you know class players tend to step up against class oppositions," Moody said.

Playing at home, SRH sure know a thing or two about the conditions. Most games here have been low scoring ones, but Moody was confident that it will be an even contest against CSK.

"Everyone is confident playing at home. We have a clear understanding of our strategies at home. The credit should be given to the players who have executed our plans well. I think we will be playing on a new wicket which is a reasonably good surface. I am sure it is going to be a decent surface, were there will be good contest between the bat and ball."

Plan was to not give Dravid room: Siddharth Kaul #RRvsDD

Posted: 07 May 2013 11:11 PM PDT

Siddharth-Kaul-RR-vs-DD-IPL-2013

Defending 154 runs against the Rajasthan Royals, Delhi Daredevils' Siddharth Kaul opened the proceedings with a maiden over against the inform Rahul Dravid. The 22-year old pacer who has come off a successful domestic season, finished with 3.5-1-23-1.  (Also Read: RR vs DD - M52 Report & Stats: IPL 2013)

The youngster who has been biding his time in the team and taking in as much as he can from the experienced players and coaches in the DD set-up sent back the opposition skipper to give the visitors their only wicket in the game.

While speaking to iplt20.com, Kaul reflected on the match and his experience in the side so far.

Excerpts from the interview:

What was the plan while coming out to bowl to Rahul Dravid and to claim his wicket later?

There was no plan. I have been working on my strengths and I have been focusing hard. I had not planned to take any particular wicket. I had to bowl my best for the team and that is what I was trying to do, that effort showed on the ground.

Tell us about your strengths?

My strength is the out-swinger. I bowled out-swing with the new ball and that was working well. My focus is on what I have to do and what I should not do. I work on what the coaches tell me to do and that helps. I try to pick on what I need to do to strengthen my bowling and work on it.

How did you prepare for opening the attack against to two in-form RR batters – Rahul Dravid and Ajinkya Rahane?

Whatever we discussed in the meeting, I had kept that in my mind and I focused on that. Players who have played before me know what is required and what should be bowled and I tried to implement that.

What was the advice given to you?

Just not to give too much room to Rahul bhai. He likes it if he is given room to play and not to let him play the flick. So that is what I tried, to bowl on one line and 'touchwood' the first over went well. In the second over I went for runs but the start was good. I am trying to give the team what is needed and being able to do that feels good.

How different is it playing in the IPL as compared to the domestic circuit?

I am crazy about cricket. Whether I play or I don't play, whether I am in the dug-out or wherever I am, I am always involved. The atmosphere is different here. The lime-light is a lot around here with so many big players around.

Do you feel any pressure?

If you are thinking positively and think it is another game, play it like another game everything goes well. When you are inside the 72 yards, in the ground I know I have come to play and so have they (opposition). So I only think about bowling well. If the batsman plays well he will score runs if I bowl well then I will get wickets.

I just focus on my cricket, my bowling regardless of the crowd and everything around. If the ball is in my hand I have to bowl, if the bat is in my hand then I have to bat and if I am fielding then I have to do that well.

What are you learning from the coaches and senior pacers in the squad?

You learn a lot of things like how to keep your spirits high, when you are feeling low and how you pump yourself up and come out of it. And what you should focus on when you are asked to bowl, deliver according to the needs of the team. So you are always on the mode of 'I have to do it, I have to do it' whenever it comes.

What is your experience of playing under Mahela Jayawardene?

It is awesome to play under such a great captain. It feels very good that you are getting to share the dressing room with such great players. It does feel good when you receive encouragement. When you field well, bowl well and get a wicket, do anything good even crack a good joke, there is a sense of involvement and oneness. There is a positive vibe and atmosphere. At no point do you feel that you are actually playing with players who you have watched on television. So that gives also adds to the positivism and it charges you up.

They have all always told me 'do you your best and give your hundred percent' and everything will be well and that is the focus.

What are plans going forward in the tournament?

We will be trying to do our best and give hundred and ten percent as always.

Feels good to finish game for team: Rahane #RR vs DD

Posted: 07 May 2013 11:04 PM PDT

Ajinkya-Rahane-RR-vs-DD-IPL-2013

Ajinkya Rahane dished out a second consecutive match-winning performance at the Sawai Mansingh Stadium to take Rajasthan Royals to second place in the Pepsi Indian Premier League 2013 points table.

With a win against the Delhi Daredevils in their seventh home game, the Rahul Dravid-led side remain unbeaten at their home turf.

The RR opener took the team across the line through an unbeaten 45-ball 63 while chasing 155 on Tuesday evening. After a 108-run opening stand with his captain, Rahane was involved in a 47-run unbroken partnership with Shane Watson as they cruised to victory in Jaipur.

After receiving the Man-of-the-Match award, Rahane spoke to iplt20.com about the win and his team.

Excerpts from the interview:

After the match against Pune Warriors India you said you would have liked to finish the game and you did that today. Tells us how you worked and how it feels to finish the game?

Obviously anyone would like to stay and finish the game and win the match for the team. It definitely feels good to do that.

And I feel that once again our bowlers did a good job. We were one bowler short, Stuart Binny could bowl only two overs, even then they did a very good job.

What was it like batting out there and what did Rahul Dravid tell you?

When Rahul bhai is batting at one end, the batsman at the other end does not need to think too much. If you follow what he says, his instructions, then you will definitely be successful. He just told me to stay positive and play my natural game.

What was the plan while chasing?

The target was 155, so the plan was that the faster we chase it down the better because we didn't want to take the match to the last over. In the last two-three games it was happening that the match was stretching into the last over. The plan was to try and finish the game by the 17th–18th over.

Was the run-rate a factor at the back of your mind with the points table so closely tied?

Frankly speaking I wasn't really thinking about that a lot. When Shane Watson came in to bat and the plan was to stay positive. During the second strategic break the plan was that if we can win the match with two overs left it will be good for us.

All your three big knocks have contributed to wins and at a crucial phase in the tournament. Tell us about the knocks?

It is important to perform when the team needs it. There are still four matches to go in the league phase so we will look to take forward the positives from this game into the games ahead. In the next match I have to start from scratch again, take a fresh start.

Does this performance add to your confidence?

Yes, definitely! When you help the team win, it boosts your confidence.

Do you feel that the team is peaking at the right time?

Yes, and I feel that the atmosphere in our team is very good and the way Rahul bhai has conducted the team, he has done it brilliantly and the way we have gelled and play as a team is what is important. It matters a lot in T20 that you play as a unit. The game is a team game and you can't depend on individuals and as a team we are playing well.

With 16 points you are close to making it to the qualifiers what is the plan moving forward?

We will take it one match at a time and try to win each game.

Tell us about the role Paddy Upton has played in the team's success?

Paddy Upton has been very good for the team and his contribution has helped. Credit goes to him and the management. The way he conducts our practice sessions and other activities is very important because it is vital to gel well as team and perform as a unit.

Lack of synchronisation has hurt us: Balaji #MI vs KKR

Posted: 07 May 2013 10:57 PM PDT

The Kolkata Knight Riders came into IPL 2013 wearing the tag of defending champions. Now, 12 games into the tournament, they are languishing at a lowly No.7 on the points table. Even after getting themselves into a situation where they have to win every match to have a chance of getting into the top four, the KKR team couldn't find their fire and lost to the Mumbai Indians by 65 runs at the Wankhede Stadium on Tuesday night.

Lakshmipathy-Balaji-MI-vs-KKR-IPL-2013

After the match, a visibly dejected Lakshmipathy Balaji spoke to iplt20.com on coping with the tough phase. He also talked about his bowling figures of 3-1-7-0 even as Sachin Tendulkar led the rampage for MI to a 170-run total.

Excerpts:

Three overs for seven runs against the MI batting line-up – does a bowling performance like this at times feel better than the wickets?

Wickets are very important in T20. The extension of picking wickets is bowling dot balls and creating pressure. It is crucial to get the early breakthroughs. Even if you bowl three maidens they will catch up later on in the game. But wickets will peg them back. I was trying to get wickets as well but it didn't happen. It was good to bowl tight though.

Do you go with a separate plan for every batsman or stick to a uniform strategy?

There's a bit of individual planning depending on whether the batsman is good on off-side or leg-side. What his release shot is and where he normally gets out – is it for the in-dipper or the away going ball? You just try to put the batsmen in a situation he is not comfortable in. But at the end of the day, a good length is good length and it's not going to change depending on the format or the batsman.

How has Brett Lee taken to the mentoring role?

I have shared various experiences with Brett Lee since 2011. We've shared the new ball, bowled in tandem. Bowling with a leading international bowler like him is a dream. When he becomes your mentor it's an added advantage. It's not only about what you do during the match but also how you prepare for it and think about your game off the field matters. He's one of the greatest mentors we could get.

What has gone wrong with KKR this season?

We were one of the teams to look forward to, given what we had achieved in the last two seasons. We haven't lived up to that promise despite having so much potential in the dressing room. I believe the main reason is that we haven't combined different aspects of the game well. It's either our bowling that clicks or the batting. We haven't been able to do well in both departments at the same game. We still have four more games to go and we will give our 100 per cent to them.

Is too much desperation to win doing you in?

We don't play our cricket with desperation and always enjoy our cricket. We enjoy each other's success and stand by each other in times of failures. That is a good thing to have in a team. This quality has taken us to the heights that we achieved in the first two seasons.

Ponting, the best thing to happen to MI: Dinesh Karthik

Posted: 07 May 2013 10:41 PM PDT

One of the most high-profile teams in the IPL, Mumbai Indians have always been the bridesmaid. They have often made people wonder how a team with such glorious ilk has never managed to take home the IPL silverware. (Also Read: MI vs KKR - M53 Report & Stats: IPL 2013)

Dinesh-Karthik-MI-vs-KKR-IPL-2013

Ahead of the 2013 season, the MI management saw a few big changes, including the arrival of coach, John Wright, mentor, Anil Kumble and captain, Ricky Ponting. The mentors have brought in their tremendous experience of illuminating international careers to put the team on the brink of Play-Offs qualification.

However, according to MI's prolific batsman, Dinesh Karthik, the biggest reason behind the team's consistency this season – eight wins from 12 games – is Ponting. Although not playing for the last few games to better the balance of the team, Ponting's presence has brought the much needed positive approach and belief into the dressing room.

Karthik told iplt20.com:

In terms of consistency is this the best season that MI are having?

Yes. I have been with the team for two years and this season has been far better than last year.

What's the biggest reason for your success this season?

It's just the mental aspect that I have been working on in particular. I try to be as calm and consistent as possible. I have worked on my batting in terms of playing the attacking shots. It also comes with confidence, with more time I spend at the crease.

Does the presence of some big names in the line-up help you play with freedom?

Yes, when you know there are some big hitting batsmen in the middle-order who can tonk the ball a mile, your role gets easier because you just try and get them on strike. When they are not around, you have the license to hit the big ones as well.

How has Ricky Ponting's presence in the camp made a difference?

He is the biggest thing to have happened to Mumbai Indians. He has this aura about him and he brings in a lot of positive energy in the team. Some of the things that he says in team meetings and some of the points he brings to the fore is really hair-raising. People don't know about many things happen at the back-end but there's a lot that happens behind closed doors. He is the key reason for us to be so positive and motivated.

What was the first advice he gave you on your batting?

The other day I had a doubt and I walked up to him. All he said was that if you see the ball and think you can hit it, you hit it. That, I thought was a very positive input and the one I really liked.

Have you been facing Anil Kumble in the nets?

I have a couple of times. Even when he does not bowl he is very serious about his game.

Do you face a lot of Lasith Malinga in the nets, particularly to practice digging out the Yorkers?

Definitely, a bit; I wouldn't say a lot. He's somebody who doesn't bowl a lot in the nets because he likes to preserve his energy and keep it for the match. He bowls a bit every day and sometimes I am lucky to get to face him.

Do you believe your performance in this IPL will help give your international career a second wind?

I'd like to think so. When you play in the IPL you face a lot of good quality bowlers and doing well here has improved my confidence.

Match Report:

Mumbai Indians continued their winning run at home as they routed Kolkata Knight Riders by 65 runs at the Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai on Tuesday night. Batting first, MI posted a competitive 170 before their bowlers, led by spinners Harbhajan Singh and Pragyan Ojha spun their strands around the KKR batsmen to dismiss them for 105.

Chasing 171, KKR lost Gautam Gambhir (0) early when the southpaw dragged one back onto his stumps. Jacques Kallis hit a boundary and a six off Abu Nechim to get KKR rolling. Manvinder Bisla got a reprieve when Harbhajan Singh put him down on 0. The KKR opener could not make much of that opportunity as he was beaten comprehensively by Pragyan Ojha and was stumped by Dinesh Karthik. Yusuf Pathan walked in to bat at No.5 and got into the act immediately launching Ojha into the crowd. Ojha however dismissed Pathan (13) the next over striking timber. Harbhajan then had Kallis (24) caught in the deep. At the halfway stage, KKR were 62 for four, needing a further 109.

Debabrata Das hit a six off Harbhajan, but wickets continued to fall at the other end as Eoin Morgan (5) was caught off Nechim. Das (23) continued his assault on Harbhajan with a six and a boundary before the spinner foxed him in the air and pouched him caught and bowled. Ryan McLaren (1) was then run out leaving KKR in dire straits. Harbhajan dismissed Rajat Bhatia (4) to claim his third wicket. Johnson sent back Narine (3) before Malinga bowled Lakshmipathy Balaji to bundle out the visitors for 105 in 18.2 overs.

Earlier MI won the toss and elected to bat. Balaji started proceedings with a maiden over. Dwayne Smith went after McLaren hitting him for consecutive boundaries in the second over before his opening partner Sachin Tendulkar got stuck into the same bowler in the fourth over and dispatched him for five successive boundaries. MI made 41 from their Power Play with both openers still at the crease. Smith welcomed Iqbal Abdulla with consecutive boundaries.

Bhatia bowled Tendulkar (48) who walked across the off-side trying to paddle to the leg, only to miss the ball and have his stumps rearranged. Abdulla had Smith (47) caught in the deep by McLaren in the next over. Rohit Sharma hit Bhatia for a boundary before following it with a six. Dinesh Karthik then launched Narine for a maximum in the seventeenth. McLaren struck twice in the 18th over; first dismissing Sharma (16) caught brilliantly by Eoin Morgan on the fence and then had Pollard caught by Narine at short fine leg. Ambati Raydu was run out in the same over without facing a ball. Karthik hit Narine for two boundaries before Harbhajan was run out in the 19th over. MI took 24 runs from the final over to reach 170 for six.

Quotes from the presentation

Gambhir: "I don't know whether it's a jinx, but if you don't play proper cricket, this is what is going to happen. Every game is a new game, I see a lot of quality around our dressing room. We have four more games to go. We have a lot of depth in our batting, we'll put our best playing XI on the park."

Rohit: "Been going really well so far. I just don't want to relax. We've got four games to go, not taking it easy. Tendulkar is experienced enough, he got us the start we wanted. 170 on this ground, there wasn't much dew today."

Tendulkar is Man of the Match for his 48: "If you look at the whole season., I've not been able to spend much time in the middle. But whatever I've batted, it's been pretty aggressive. There has been a bit of help for the seamers. I was striking the ball well today, and I thought therefore I should be more aggressive. It's about give and take - giving advice. It shouldn't be one way traffic about just me talking, it's about discussing cricket and sharing our thoughts. The passion for the game is very much there, whatever time I get on the field I try to make the most of it."

Mr Manish Vora Senior President of Yes Bank presents the Yes Bank Maximum Sixes Award to Shane Watson of Rajasthan Royals during match 52 of the Pepsi Indian Premier League (IPL) 2013 between The Rajasthan Royals and the Delhi Daredevils held at the Sawai Mansingh Stadium in Jaipur on the 7th May 2013
Quotes from the presentation

Mahela Jayawardene: "We made a few mistakes, Rajasthan played some good cricket, we were below par. Everyone's working hard, trying their best, everyone goes through seasons like that."

Rahul Dravid: "So far, it's been working out pretty well for us. We were under pressure with Watson picking up a bit of an injury, and Binny falling down after two overs. In T20 you can't afford to put a price on your wicket, Rahane has been batting beautifully, he has reacted very well to being dropped from the Champions Trophy. (Joking) I picked Hogg in the last match because I didn't want to be the oldest payer in the team, and this time it was Tambe. What a story it is for him."

Man of the Match is Ajinkya Rahane: "I just want to enjoy my batting, that's what I did today. We wanted to play the ball on its merit, take it one ball at a time."
